Fish lying on the bottom? | |
mess Small Fry Posts: 4 Kudos: 1 Votes: 0 Registered: 08-Apr-2007 | I have a 20 gallon regular tank. The water quality seams to be fine. I have 8 fish in the tank. 4 zebra Danios and 4 Golden Dwarf fish (I do not know the exact type). 3 of the mgoldens seeam fine. One of them is just sitting on the bottom and seams to be struggling. It can swin when needed, but only when startled. Is this fish sick, or is something else going on? |

As that will give people more information, than water seems fine, and being that water quality seems to be the a major reason for sickness and disease in fish. Are there any marks, spots on the fish. A picture would help. There are some really smart people here but they will need more than a simple desc Djrichie "Don't Panic" Djrichie "So Long, and Thanks For All The Fish" Douglas Adams |

How long have you had the fish, whats the real water perameters in detail, what is the tank setup like? How long has the tank been set up? If you can post a picture it will help enormously. Not only would we be able to identify the species, but also what may be wrong with it. |

Does it look bloated Like its breathing is laboured? Does it respond at feeding time? What is the tank ph? Do you have test kits? (I know people asked for 'parameters' but you may not know exactly which ones....) ph nitrates temp will be a start. ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |

mess Small Fry Posts: 4 Kudos: 1 Votes: 0 Registered: 08-Apr-2007 | I did a test of parameters and have the following information: ph - arround 6.5+ Amonia - 0 Nitrate (I think - the one that comes after Amonia in the cycle) - 0 temp - 76 deg I have had the fish for approx 3 mths. The fish did not look bloated There has been more information - Since the intial posting the fish seams to have recovered some. Currently the fish is doing the following. It has found a spot under one of the plastic sunken ships that I have in the tank. It has dug a shallow hole in the gravel under the ship. It comes out durring feeding time and then goes back under the ship. All of it's fins look intact so I do not beleive that it is being attacked by the other fish in the tank. Thoughts? |

Rsponding to other fish in tank? like chasing from it's little nook... breeding behaviours? Is it territorial/rearranging gravel? Are there any eggs on the underside of the rock? ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |

mess Small Fry Posts: 4 Kudos: 1 Votes: 0 Registered: 08-Apr-2007 | It does not appear to be sensetive to light. It has rearanged the gravel. I do not know about breeding behavior. I have a pic of the other fish in the tank of the same type, but am having trouble posting it, should I send it to you? |

wish-ga Mega Fish Dial 1800-Positive-Posts Posts: 1198 Kudos: 640 Registered: 07-Aug-2001 | Rearranging the gravel is often breeding behaviour. Some fish make a hollow and guard it. But that wouldn't include lying on it's side. When it is on the bottom does it seem incapacitated? Or is it just hanging there out of preference? Sounds like some housekeeping type behaviour to moi. Digging and guarding as opposed to "ouch my tummy hurts I will just lie here a while" Does it sometime nudge other fish and swim really close to them? That is lovey dovey behaviour sometimes too. ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |

mess Small Fry Posts: 4 Kudos: 1 Votes: 0 Registered: 08-Apr-2007 | It is not lying on its side. I do not think that it is incapacitated because it can swine quite well and does during feeding time. SO I tihnk that it is gaurding, not incapacitated. Given your explanations it may be breeding. The reason I say that is that whenever it comes out for food it swims very close to another fish of the same type. |
