My Siamese fighter's fins have frayed. I am sure it is not from fin nippers as it is kept alone and the water is good but I am worried what can I do?

How old is it? And are they just frayed, or do they have white edges? Any other signs of a problem? (Is the fish eating?)

Make sure your water quality is good e.g. 0 ammo, 0 nitrites. If no sign of white stuff, I would just let it go and see. If you see the situation degrading, then maybe use some Melafix in your water. That might help. Report back here if you see any change for the worse.

Good luck !

I second Sponge Bob. Just keep an eye on things.

FYI, I know a bunch of fish vets, and what most of them will tell you to do when you can't identify a problem is to do a 30 percent water change and add a teaspoon of aquarium salt per gallon of water.

Also, check your nitrates -- high levels can cause frayed fins. (Some fish veterinarians say you should keep nitrates under 25 ppm if possible, and most agree they should never be allowed to climb above 50 ppm and stay there.

Good luck, and keep us posted on any changes.

I did what you said and the fish seams OK eating normally and swimming around as usual. How long will it take for the fins to heal back to there original splendor?
