weren't we right about goldfish in a cichlid tgank

try using jungle buddies fungal clear as a preventive, but melfix should be fine, i suggest jusat waiting and very clean water. and watch out for any little issues such as bacterial or paracites. wacth very closely.

It depends on what is in your filter cartridge. If it contains charcoal, then yes you should remove that portion as the charcoal can absorb the melafix from the water.

did you move the goldfish? you can quarantine it but the main thing is to get it out of that tank cause... cichlids and goldfish? tropical fish and cold water don't exactly mix.

yes i did move him and he is know in a much larger tank but how long should i leave the filter cartridges out for and how long do u think it would take to heal the wounds. he seems very happy and doesnt even seem to notice the wounds. and it doesnt seem to infect him.

it doesn't affect him now, but watch out for the long term.
and when u say u moved him to a bigger tank, i am guessing he is in a QT tank by himself.

if he is in his own tank, and he is a goldfish he isn't to critcal on water conditions, so removing the filter carbon should be fine. keep out until treatment for right away infections is over, and than u can let the wounds clear, a pic would be better to acess the problem.

it depends, it doesn't make sence to treat a sick fish with other health fish. i would recomend u get a smal 10 gallon as a QT tank and run a sponge filter in their, this prodiving the best housing for sick fish. and u dont have to worry about how long u have the cartiage out.

There are filter cartridges that don't have charcoal in them. What type of filter do you have?

Also if the cartridges are older than a couple of weeks, the charcoal basically becomes ineffective as the charcoal has absorbed it's capacity. If the cartridges are clogged from wastes they can be rinsed so that the flow is not diminished, but as stated the charcoal will no longer be effective in it's absorbtion capacity and thus could be left on the tank without removing all the medication.

great points old timer, also i was confused by what u said, about if i take it out, than i won't have to recycle again. why would u need to cycle the tank?

also like old stated, the filter is important. whcih type is it.
