I'll let the pictures do the talking. Noticed this last friday (june 17th). Fish had peas only on friday, nothing over the weekend, peas again on monday and no sign of improvement.

Any ideas on what might be causing this?

^_^

Pic 2
It's only seen in one of the barbs. Also seems the smallest of the school.

You were right, that doesn't look like an egg-bound gold barb to me.
It ate peas yesterday, and that still didn't help? Bloat is still the only thing I can think of, since the fish's scales aren't sticking out as in dropsy.

If it isn't having difficulty swimming, then I don't think that the barb's condition is serious as of yet. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Well...one week and many peas later it's still there . Activity level seems normal.

I fed a small ammount of bioblend yesterday and today, otherwise the tank wasn't being fed except for peas. Since there was no improvement I'll go back to regular feedings as I dont want anyone wasting away.

Okay it looks like it's getting worse....I want to squish it out so bad but I have no clue what it is. Tumor maybe? Do parasites do that ?

Activity level continues to be normal, begs for food right along with the others. Swimming is still possible although as shows in this pic I'm sure if it gets much larger it'll be hard.

Sorry, I didn't see this 'till now.

I've never heard of parasites that cause lumps like that, but a tumor sounds possible. I had this lump problem with a cory a little while back, maybe my discussion with Cory_Di will help you: [link=http://fishprofiles.com/files/forums/The%20Hospital/57342.html]http://fishprofiles.com/files/forums/The%20Hospital/57342.html" style="COLOR: #808080[/link]

It could just be one of those unexplained things.

It continues...I was debating euthanising the other day, simply because it's a work tank and I fear the little guy will pass when I cant attend to the tank putting the entire community at risk. I'm not sure how well he'd like being moved to a 10 gallon as qtine either.

Most current pic...[/font]

hope that works out for you... fish diseases baffle me.

Could either be bacterial swelling, or worms , or even constipation, have you seen it poo recently?

On the worm front, roundworms can be longer than the fish and sometimes even heavier, depending on the fish's resilience. Tapeworm in particular often exceed the length or their host many times, so worms could indeed cause the swelling. Dropsy incidentally is really just a noticeable symptom of kidney damage, and kidney damage doesnt always have to cause the animal to bloat out.

The pinkness around the belly could be infected tissue though,so id treat with a broad spectrum antibiotic and see what happens. Bit of garlic to cause a worm purge couldnt hurt in the meantime.

Thers no point worrying about cancer as you cant do anything about it, check into treatments for other ailments as diagnosing cancer in that fish would be impossible until after death anyway.

Thanks for the reply longhair.
I've done peas, and fasting which is why I didnt think it was dropsy. I havent actually seen waste coming out but being the office tank I also dont have the liberty to sit for any lenght of time to wait for it.

I'll give garlic foods a try again.

No, problem

If your gonna treat with antibacterial meds remember to do it sooner rather than later or they might just finish him off.

Well I finally got the meds on thursday....same day he was busy trying to die ]!

I netted him and the diamond tetra into a breeding net they were both rather hidden. The gold passed by friday morning, the diamond I'm not seeing eat but I wasnt able to euthanize since I hadn't been feeling well.

Hopefully he'll make it the weekend .
