I was just curious if anyone had some input on good things to have on hand in case of disease? Or the best products for a planted, freshwater tank?
I have PimaFix and MelaFix, due to a current issue.

Also, are there any good suggested doc's or books to learn how the treatments effect the water chemistry?

And I'm curious what others do when treating, since various flter components have to be removed/stopped during that time?

I keep the following on hand:

Maracyn Plus with biospheres- mouth and body " fungus", popeye, dropsy, and ulcers. Can use with any tank inhabitants, plants also.

Maroxy - best thing I've found for true fungal problems. Fine in planted tanks also.

Coppersafe- if fish can take copper and no plants or inverts ( quarantine tank), this will for sure knock out external parasites. Works great for quarantine tank.

Melafix ( you know already)

Jungle anti-parasite fish food ( for quarantine tank). For internal parasites

Rid-ich - self explanatory

Parasites (internal and external), fungus, bacteria, and wounds (antiseptic). That's about 5 kinds of medications that are good to have in your fishie first aid kit. Be careful to not fall into the overmedicating pitfalls...find out what the fish's problem is before trying out 2 or 3 different meds if you can. Over doing it on the meds can be much worse than the initial problem you were trying to treat.

well, when I have a QT tank set up, I generally dont use any filtration and do daily water changes using the drip method, which looks kind of like this

fresh water already with correct doses of meds dissolved

tank/bowl (I use a 2g bowl - I dont want my sick fish moving around too much)

waste water bowl (will be sterilized after use)

I would also keep an ammonia locking dechlorinator such as Amquel handy, as it neutralises ammonia and will protect your fish from any cycling activity.

as for meds - I'm in the UK, which means malachite green, melafix, horse antibiotics and dog wormer, and prayers

I like to think that whoever designed marine life was thinking of it as basically an entertainment medium. That would explain some of the things down there, some of the unearthly biological contraptions
