Hey everyone,

I have a 10 gallon tank that has been set up for a long time. Suddenly, all of my fish have started dying and I'm not sure why. The fish are all long finned blue and leopard danios. They will start swimming around near the top of the water with their fins spread and seem to be gasping for breath and now one has a popped out eye. I did not notice this on the other fish. They looked physically normal. So far I've lost two in the past week and one looks like it will be gone by the end of the day. I checked the nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia levels in the tank and found no problems. I have green plants and a good filter system, so I don't believe the oxygen level is too low. Can anyone help me?

Thanks!

Lauren

I do not know what your problem might be, but my guess would be that you have some form of poison in the water.

Do a 50% water change right away and maybe someone else might be able to see what would be next.

Could it be that someone dropped something in the tank? Did you "feed" your plants with liquid ferts and added way too much? Anything in that line? Did you do anything to your tank that you haven't done before?

I'm working on the water change right now. I don't use any fertilizers for my plants because I just have a couple moneyworts. I don't think that any strange things have been put in the tank. All I know that I put in was fish food and my normal water conditioner. Hopefully the water change will help. The fish still are acting very sick

I changed the water, but it didn't seem to solve the problem. The one fish that was looking sick has died and my last one is now dying. It looks like it's scales are turning white-ish and dying in areas. It starts around the head and seems to rot through the mouth and eyes and move to the fins. Does anyone know what this could be?

First off, sorry about your losses, guess there wasn’t much you could do.

From what you describe, maybe your fish have Cotton Mouth (Mouth Fungus) which is most of the time fatal. Go to Google and research the appearance of this illness, you should be able to find info in text and pictures.

BTW, this illness is not a fungus at all; it is only called such because it looks like it.

When I came home from work today, the last fish was dead too. It does look like the cotton mouth disease. Now that all the fish are gone, what should I do to prepare for new ones? How long should I wait before getting some more?
