Yesterday I did my usual water changes in all my tanks. Today I woke up and the water in one of my tanks is just slightly cloudy. My Synodontis eupterus is gasping at the top of the tank for air. All my other fish seem to be doing just fine. He was acting kind of weird yesterday but he sometimes does that after a water change. Today there is most deffinatly something wrong.

I added carbon into my filter which I normaly don't run with and I lowered my water level so that the filter would start to put some O2 into the tank.

I don't have a test kit to tell you whats going on there and I can't run off to get a test done because I have two exams here in an hour. All my other fish are doing just fine. I don't see anything on the Synodontis eupterus that looks strange. No white spots or growths or anything. I did add in a hand full of young silver mollies to the tank about 3 days ago. Might he have eaten one and had problems with it?

Thanks for your help everyone!!!

Sorry no one responded sooner.

Slightly cloudy sounds to me like a minicycle, could have been overcleaning on your part. If you've got the test kits and have tested that the tap water is safe (no ammonia, somtimes it's there ) and if the fish is still looking worse for the wear I'd do another water change. Lowering the water level like you did should have helped as well.

Good luck, keep us posted!

Update........things are not looking good. I came home from work and my cat was just about all white and floating head up near the bottem of the tank. I scooped him up and put him in a separet container. I think I might have to put him out. I have had him for about a year now and it was probably one of my favorite fish.

My tank readings were

Nitrate 40
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0

Also checked cholroine and that tested 0 too.

I am was really kind of surpised that my Nitrates were so high. I haven't be over feeding and I change out 20% of my water every Wednesday.

Other fish are looking fine. I am going to do another water change tomorrow night when I get back from my internship.

This is the second random death I have had in this tank in the past 2-3 months.

Well my cat is gone now which is leaving a void in my tank now. I really liked that fish.......

I did a 50% water change Friday night as my water has stayed clear this time. All my other fish seem to be looking just fine at this time. I plan on waiting a few weeks and then adding a new catfish of some sort. I might add a new feather fin or try something new. I just dont know right now. Maybe a Synodontis multipunctatus or Pictus cat.

Sorry to hear you lost him .

40 ppm really isnt all that high, it might be part of the cause, but I wouldnt think it's the only cause
Have you tried contacting your water company to see if anythign was added to the water supply recently?

Since you're considering new additions, be sure you wait 3-4 weeks or so just to make sure everythings running fine in the tank before adding new stock.
