If like most aquarium fish its a little fat, you want to minimise any effect of organ compaction as soon as possible. Next is to take the best guess at the cause, but id lay good odds on it being bacterial, and the complications of constipation and intestinal blockage. Its kinda usual for them to work hand in hand to make the fish sick. If you could post a pic of the fish, as ever it can really help me figure out what the problem is in a way words never can. If you were worried about how much time the fish has left then I guess you take your best shot and use something that kills a range of parasites, try to kill some bacteria, and cause a purge all in one go, and the easiest way to do that is a few feedings of jungle labs antiparasite formula , it contains dewormers and antiprotozoans, and they usually also act as purgatives,(yeah I know I told you not to feed it, but this is meds) and a good shot of melafix, get the temps up (very slowly to a max of 84f)and the oxygen nice and high. If that doesnt solve it first time, most times , im dont know what the hell does.lol. Id rather see a pic of the fish before you wade in with that though, because of the ever present danger from renal failure in a fish that may be a little obese. If it turns out to be dropsy you also have to be very careful about how you use meds. It might yet come down to nothing more complicated than feeding it a little crushed garlic or blanched mashed peas. Swelling is unfortunately one of those non-specific symptoms that can indicate almost anything, and sussing out the cause takes a bit of detective work, although im to this day not sure why people ask for water quality reading when confronted with swollen guts, as readable nitrate and ammonia is the one thing that never directly causes bloating, the only thing that could cause that is massive overuse of salt. Harmful bacteria and parasites dont show on any test kit. Its a bit of a time waster. Its about transmission, cagemates and other species present like shrimps and snails, or amphibians, parasites, and feeding. Maybe temperature is the only needed stat because of the effect it has on digestion. Get me a piccie! |
