I removed the oranda and put him in a 20 gallon with a filter and medicated it with some pills I bought that are supposed to treat it...and suggestions? |

I think its highly likely that what your experiencing is a rather nasty case of aeromonas hydrophilia, another nasty infection almost omnipresent in aquaria that typically takes hold when bioload in a tank is a little too high. Its a major killer of captive fish, and usually causes septacaemia in the later stages. As I say the frogs will eventually succumb too, to the condition known as "red leg" This is a job for antibiotics, and youll need to treat the whole tank and all infected parties. Its persistant, so be prepared for a long treatment time, perhaps even 3 weeks to a month. Fish and frogs typically reinfest each other, and its one of the reasons I dont encourage they are kept in close quarters together. Fine in a lake , but not so in the aquarium, the transmission rate is too high. These too creatures living closely will take a small low level presence of infectious agents , and turn them into a full on infectious plague, with the fish usually succunbing first. Treatments known to be effective, though all can be hard on fish include, oxytetracycline, and sulfamerazine for direct treatment on the fish body, and methylene blue will kill the bugs in the water and substrates. BTW iodine is more effective than bleach for sterilisation of tank equipment against this particular bacterium. |
