I can't see the caudal fin image well enough, but the pectoral looks like it has been bitten. Do you have any fish you suspect might have fought with the Dempsey?

You might want to add an antiseptic to help prevent the fins from getting infected.

You can click on the pictures to enlarge them. I'll try to get another picture of his caudal fin. In the picture you can see the white, almost a stripe, on his caudal fin, the other Dempsey of the same size has some slit in his fins but none have the white area around them. The slits in the fins are from another Dempsey who inhabited the tank before I introduced two new Dempseys. Initially the larger Dempsey was very territorial but has become much more lenient or lazy.

I'd say that the tail was bitten or torn. The fin rot I've seen pictures of is not limited to one or two fin rays, but spreads farther. The deep splits look like physical damage from another fish or impact with a hard object.

Actually, it looks to me like a wound that has become infected. The area around the tears is inflamed and discolored, which doesn't happen with injuries alone.

In my opinion, it would be best to treat the fish (I think Maracyn gets rid of fin rot?).

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.
