I just did a water change and all levels are good. pH 7.6, NO 2,3, & 4 zero. Last night all fish looked great, this morning, after doing a 50% water change, male barb is hiding in the plants gasping for air, or so it seems. My tank consists of 2-Emperor 280 Filters with BIO-Wheel, 1-Ebo-Jager 250 watt heaters, 1 Rena 400 air pump, sand & gravel mix bottom, with plants, drift wood, and stones. All other fish are just fine. I added more water conditioner, just incase I didnt add enough the first time, and stress coat.

Any ideas of what might be going on? HELP

Fifty percent water changes are not recommended...

Unless a perfect pH and temp is matched the large change is risky.

What happened to the fish would be speculation but if the pH and temp of the new water were not matched exactly some fish would be affected.

Stress Coat is not required in any circumstance and is just a waste of money.

Water changes do stress most fish. Watch him for an hour or two and see if he doesnt perk up. And what gary said is very accurate.

Ph and temp were the same. This was just my big tank cleaning day, once every two months. 15 gal of water is 5 days old water, keeped covered and cured. The rest is sameday water, cured. The temp has not even changed 1/2 degree. pH is right where is has been since last change, and the last. I just don't know.

Don't add to much water conditioner. That could be just as bad if not worse.

The syptoms you gave is very common for many types of shock of some infections. Unless you can keep an eye on your fish and maybe come up with some other possible symptoms, you could either wait it out to see if it gets better or try using meds for bacterial or a wide variety of some sort of infections.

Maybe I should move him to the sick tank. I don't know if he was gasping before the water change or not. I didn't see him. (which is making me think maybe he was already hiding) I have a broad medication I can use (Revive) so maybe I will try that. It's been 2 1/2 hours since water change and he is still hiding and gasping wildly. Poor guy. Female is trying to hang out next to him. Swimming around him but normally. I have such delicate fish in tank, that i just can't think it is due to the water change.

2 months is a long time for a gravel vack and water change, maybe it was a shock to the fish with alot of new tank water.

..."This was just my big tank cleaning day, once every two months".

Not bad. But you can be sure there will be a pH change in tank water after two months.

New water will not have the same exact pH as the tank. Just a very small and rapid pH change will affect fish.

But, as you mentioned, the fish may have been affected before the change.

Kitty, I do a gravel vac every week and small water change too. This was my BIG CLEANING DAY.

Gary, you may be right about the pH change, but I did check before dumping water into tank, (the older water) and it read the same. I just don't know, will keep the update posted. He is now in QT with meds. lets keep fingers crossed.

Lots of "Kittys" around here...

Anyway, there's a good chance the fish will not survive.

When they display the actions you described it's usually a bad sign.

Yes, he died. toward the end he was flicking his head, not really itching but a motion like it on the plants. I am going to guess some kind of parasite although nothing new has been add for quit sometime now.

update. Tank is going great; however, yesterday, the female barb started doing the same as the male did. She died today. I am thinking a gill problem, more along the lines of flukes. Both my yoyo loaches are flashing. They are the only ones. What should I use to treat the tank. I will be moving the banded loach and elephantnose out of the tank into my QT. Thanks
