Could be anything from cysts from parasites like trematodia or cauliflower disease, cancer, bacterial septacaemia causing swelling, to osmotic or gaseous failure. Can you describe the exact location of the lumps a bit better, if they are opaque, transparent, discoloured etc? Better yet, post a pic of the puffer if you can. It might be worth giving us your water perameters too, ammonia , nitrite and nitrate , if theres salt in the water, and how much, temps etc, filtration, size of tank etc how long youve had the puffer. Be specific on this one, cos itll be tricky to nail down. All those factors really will be needed to help give you a diagnosis as accurate as possible, as quickly as possible, and time is usually a factor in most problems. |

The lumps are on her belly right in the middle on her right side.....they aren't discolored or clearish at all! Just two lumps that suddenly appeared today! |

Its just that both carry tapeworm, which as they mature may cause lumps, from the sheer size of the parasite, and the bacterial infections that result from the hook covered heads lodging in the stomach and intestines. Are the lumps just raised bumps, or are they really ounced spherical blobs? Still need that water info BTW, it really does matter. Puffers are also very vulnerable to a condition known as vibriosis, it causes lumps and boils on the skin in addition to attacking the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract. Its common in brackish environments, its a bacterium often held in the gut for extended periods of time, and many brackish fish are carriers, hence its sometimes surprise appearance after even a lengthy ownership of the fish with no prior hint of illness. If it is vibriosis, sulfamerazine, oxytetracycline and furan should kill it, and treatments need to be a minimum of 11 days long. Since the conditions most likely at fault are bacterial and respond to similar drugs, I might pre-emptively treat for that before thinking about deworming the fish, if indeed deworming is needed. I wouldnt leap into any treatment regime without knowing the water quality first though. |
