My beautiful Rainbow Shark decided to jump ship the other day, by the time I noticed the cat batting him around the floor he was quite dry but he seemed to come around and I thought he was going to be Ok...... the next day he had developed a really bad case of tail rot..... I immediately started treating him with Melafix, just as I thought he was getting better I noticed that his belly was extremely swollen, along with the area around his anus, which looked red and kind of rotting also. That evening it looked like a clump of white stuff comming out of it. After a closer examination it looked like white eggs.... (Then my cat fish came up behind him and made a snack out of them.). After comming home from work today he was in worse shape, he could'nt evan swim. I brought him to my lfs and they said it looked like his insides were comming out and there was really no hope for him at all. I couldn't stand watching him suffer any more so I ended his misery. It looked like there were more of those egg type things comming out, then I grew quite concerned that they may be some type of parasite so I took it one step farther and discovered that his entire belly was stuffed with them although I did'nt see anything that I could say was definately a worm, or other organism. I guess I probably should't have put him down with ice water that probably killed more than just him.

Sorry for the long blurb but I'm quite concerned about my other fish now. :#(

It could be some kind of internal damage from the whole cat thing?

disease is always present in tanks, like cold germs at work?!? so it is possible what ever it was your Rainbow shark was stressed and so vunerable to illness. If you have been treating with Melafix carry on for the full five days and just keep a close eye on your fish. do a water change at the end of the five days(thats what it says on the bottle right?) and hope for the best

An expert may have a better idea about the "egg like stuff" if it is a disease of some sort. you also might get more information in the Hospital forum(Mods should it be moved??)

and here is a link on putting fish to sleep.

Sorry to here about your fish. It could be possibly insect larvae in him if your house is e to insects. Also, if another fish jumps out of your tank, and knowing rainbow sharks they will, run them backwards through the water to get it flowing throught their gills. This can been a fish out of shock. If the need arises for euthanasia try baking soda. This is a harmless way to put down a fish as well.

Thanks for the responses, I have a female betta that I guess has dropsy, (looks like a pinecone :-( ) I have tried to do some research on it and I have found conflicting information about it. Could it be dropsy that the shark had??? I just don't understand the mass of egg like things. Is dropsy contagious??? Also... is it always fatal??

I don't see any symptoms in my other fish but now that I think about it, I had a pair of killie fish and one of them had a rather large belly so I figured that it was a female.... then it suddenly died, now the other Killie seems to be getting a bit of a belly...... I am treating them with some stuff that I can't remember the name of it but it turned the water green and is supposidly for dropsy......

Is there a connection here???????

Treat it with either Pimafix of Melafix. I don't know which one treats dropsy, but be sure to use a lot. You should probably just double the recommended amount especially if the sick fish are isolated. Also, do some significant water changes. The best thing to do is 20% every other day for 8 days. This allows you to do it gradually. Good Luck!

hello, probably some kind of bacterial infection???? I think you are treating with Malchite green- spelling is almost certainly wrong!?? but i think its that

Any how I would treat with mela fix and prima fix esp, drospey in bettas can be stopped but not cured normally they are e to it, I think it may start as a bacterial problem but ends up damaging the kidneys?

I do Water changes every second day when my fish are sick, I have over stocked tanks so do a lot(normally once a week) any way it depends what your water is like and whether or not that green stuff damages the cycle? its up to you really - will it stress the fish?

good Luck

Also forgot to mention, mixing meds can be very stressful Not sure how long it takes Maclite Green to be removed from the water? (and then you could start using the melafix and primafix - can't recommand then enough! saved my beloved pleco a few weeks ago)

hope the fish do better.

I have to agree with the melafix, it has saved a few fish I thought were gonners for sure. It truly is amazing stuff. Now does it or pimafix treat HITH?? I rescued a Tiger Oscar from a pet shop. It was in a huge tank with a few other Oscars a bit smaller than it, they were taking chunks out of him and he also had fin rot. He is a wopping 12" long and I got him for $5 bucks!!!!! We will be getting a much bigger tank for him and my other Tigers in a week or two, he is doing good and still looks alot happier evan though he is a little cramped. He has 4 or 5 pretty deep holes in his head and I have read conflicting information about HITH and I'm a bit concerned about him. My main questions are: Is it contagous?, Is it curable?, Will it kill him, Does it cause him pain?

And thanks again for the info and sympathy.
