Hey guys/gals, new to the forums and wondering what a betta under stress would usually be the symptoms, and when it has "velvet". Thanks, just a lil worried about "Shy"

Hi,

Check this link for [link=Velvet]http://www.fishprofiles.com/interactive/disease/velvet.asp" style="COLOR: #BA55D3[/link]; and allow the fish time to settle and feel comfortable in its new surroundings - anything up to a week I guess, providing there are no other symptoms.

Welcome to FP Chino

A new betta is likely to be stressed out upon arrival at a new home, but usually they are pretty hardy and adapt nicely. He may be a little timid at first, and refuse to eat. If you try a whole bunch of flake and pellet foods and he wont go for it, you might need to feed him live. My newest betta boy is only going for bloodworms, although I did get him to eat a pea last night.

Look at the link Mal sent, and come back to keep us updated.

HTH and Good Luck!

Just a quick check, is the tank heated and are there any other fish in with him?

Okay, so velvet is not the case, and it seems to be normal stress, thanks. He is eating fine, at regular times. And no, unfortunately it is not a heated tank, and is infact a bowl, which is maybe 2.5 gallons? There are no other fish with him. He likes to swim around, like if he was trying to get to know the place you know?

Here he is! Man is a quick one!

Hmm is this the only way to post pictures? I seem to be having some trouble

Btw, are there any other types of food, or treats I can give him?

Yes indeed, frosty in the mornings, chilly in the evenings. Anywho, I now have a heater that Im going to put on high in my room too see if the room temp itself will change the water temp. Have you ever put a mirror by your Betta? Cause I was experimenting and (new to bettas) I just first saw my betta flare his gills and spread his fins, which shows his true beauty! But the downside is, that it gets him in a frenzy type mode, trying to get his "evil twin". Haha, no more mirror for him, dont want to end up with a hurt friend..

20 mins a day won't hurt him, a lot of breeders use it for excercise to help the bettas spread their fins for showing. even 5 minutes will help boost his vitality. animals are always at their peak when they feel they have to be boss of the area/group. Think alpha male physique

the room temp will help. If you need to, you can insulate the bowl if you have to turn the heater off. you could even make a little styrofoam box for it that just slips over the top if you need to turn the heater off. Styro underneath will help stop the heat from escaping out the bottom (depending on what item he is sitting on in the first place)
