I woke up today to find one of my ottos dead and stuck to the filter intake. It has been fine ever since i got it, but I think I may know why it died. I kinda eased off cleaning my aquarium for my month since i was really busy but now after a month or so I did a small water change and I will do some more small water changes in the next week or so just so I can avoid doing a big water change. I was reading another post on [link=here]http:// www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Water%20Quality/60516.html[/link] that was about how some people havent changed their water for over years... and yet their fish survived. I think my otto died because they got used to the water chemistry and since I did a water change I changed the chemistry and I cleaned up the tank??? I also clipped down some plants which my ottos like to hind behind... and now i Cant find my other ottos???? Help is appreciated.

Eric,

I assume you had the Oto for quite a while so integration issues can be eliminated.

Was it your only Oto? In this case, he was probably lonely to begin with.

You say you didn’t change your water for at least a month. How much water did you change afterwards? If it wasn’t more than 20%, it would not have been a major change to the tank conditions.

What did you do when you “cleaned up the tank”?

You clipped down some plants. How long ago was that? Maybe you removed the food source for your Oto and he starved to death.

I have 3 ottos... well had... now I have 2. I did a 20% water change... and then added water back in but... I added more water in then i took out because of evaporation. I clipped all of the plants down because they were overgrown a bit... I scraped the walls for algae but didnt clean where they primarily feed which is on the lower part of the back wall...I think maybe there wasn't enough. Im feeding them with algae wafers though. The other two ottos are hiding now .
