Longhair....I don't have the time to get to the LFS unfortunatly...I have very long and odd work hours. The reason I'm going for the garlic is it's somewhat easier to find. I would use real meds for it if we're sure that's what the cause of the lump is .

Grocery store is only slightly easier to find time to get to :%).

Its starting to sound more and more like migratory tapeworm.

Jungle parasite clear is a great product but ironically sick fish may not eat, so something that treats the water and permeates the fish would be ideal. If its that severe maybe an ivermectin based product might be needed, but its not a particularly safe drug, and dosages have to be exact. I think weve gone past the herbal and homeopathic remedy stage, time for some hardcore drugs

IME I have used Black Walnut extract for my dog. You can get it at any health foods store. It works WONDERFUL for parisites. It is highly recommended for things like roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms, and others in that category. If nothing else it wouldn't hurt for you to look into it. I have heard nothing but good things abotu it for dogs and cats. I don't know if it would work for the fish but it is definitely a possibility.

You may be best to half-dose the first amount, although with tapeworm it may not make a difference.

Jungle Parasite Clear will kill almost anything. It's also good in that it's easy to come by.

Check the packaging to make sure you have the one with Praziquantel in it. You might want to feed Jungle Antiparasite food at the same time.

Okay...three (or so) days after feeding the garlic and I'm not too happy. The swelling seems to have gone down. Coworker E and St both mentioned that it seemed to have gone down a bit the day after but I wasn't sure of it. Now I am, but the fish also looks like it's scales are breaking apart. Similar to badly chapped skin in winter where it just cracks apart. There's also what appears to be something protroding from the fish, I'm assuming a worm.

Any ideas on exactly what to look for in terms of worming meds Brands? active ingredients? I dont' wanna lose this guy .

Phosphoric acid is a weak acid. I wouldn't really be concerned about that, but I also don't believe garlic will eliminate any parasites. It may however boost the immune system (unproven), which is never a bad thing.

So... I've got fish that I want to treat with garlic food...and I have minced garlic but it also has phosphoric acid in it. [link=wiki]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphoric_acid" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link] makes it sound pretty pretty evil, but it also says it"is easily diluted with water."

The question becomes, is it safe for fish if it's safe for human consumption? Would rinsing it in water make it safer?

Thoughts?

I don't think the acid will be a problem, and i wouldn't rinse the garlic, as you would be leeching out some of the stuff you want to feed.

Freshest garlic you can get, crush and feed

Ridding fish of tapeworm can be tricky, tapeworm have heads covered with tiny hooks that they use to anchor into the flesh of the victim, so they cannot always let go even when they want to. Most wormers for tapeworm will also help dissolve the tissue of the worm, but garlic obviously wont. Its time for a bit of vetinary consultation if you want to be sure.

At this stage id almost definately go for a proper wormer rather than rely on garlic.

As the daleks would say - EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE

Well I'm not sure what it is ...but I'm more than willing to try the garlic, I've done garlic foods before when I worried about parasites on a zebra danio they loved it but that one didnt gain weight.
Last time I tried "making" the food it was just dried garlic rehydrated with water then allowing the food to soak and absorb the garlic....this time I thought I'd try minced garlic...coworker St (who loves garlic) claims it's really really strong stuff....I'm thinking a rinse in water then mashing up some bioblend into it
Any concerns over the phosphoric acid ...I dont want them disolving before my eyes after all

well, if it is a tapeworm, you are gunna need some serious garlic

are you making your own food? will they take the crushed garlic straight?

Are you treating for parasites or as an immune booster?

Discus breeders/keepers feed it on a regular basis, so i don't think its that bad.

In large doses, yes, it can be poisonous, but not in the quantities you are feeding i shouldn't think.

Sorry, I can't help you but I did notice Cory Addict mentioned feeding garlic to cories in [link=this thread]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Bottom%20Feeder%20Frenzy/65259.html?200510180217" style="COLOR: #CC3366[/link].
