I think one of my platies is dying. It is probably of old age but I didn't know how old she was when I bought her. She is hovering around behind the filter out take(canister filter) and she is VERY skinny. Help please! thanks

Edit: She has been getting nipped at too because her dorsal fin has a little bite out of it.
I am also a little worried that it could be a disease and it could spread through the entire tank. That would suck.

She is still eating but after she's done she just goes right back behind the filter outtake. She is not getting any fatter. The only other tank I could put her in would be the fry tank with platy fry and rosy barb fry. They are only about a month old. Do you think I could put her in there or would she eat the fry? The rosy barb fry are very small and are about this long --] -----

[font color="#000080"]It's always a good idea to quarantine any fish that's just not doing so well. Fish waste away for a variety of reasons, most of them fairly benign, but if you can get her into her own tank it should be easier to figure it out. Another good reason to quarantine is that in case she has anything contagious, it will reduce the risk of her spreading it to the other fish.

For a platy, a 5 gallon bucket with an airstone and 25 watt heater should really be adequate, make sure you put a plant in there so she feels a little more at home. You'll need to change out 100% of the water every few days to make sure it stays nice and clean. Dirty water will only make the condition worse. Dose with some Melafix and aquarium salt, watch her for a few days and hopefully she'll start perking up. The melafix and salt will help her fins hel up too. It's most likely just stress, but if she's not doing any better soon you might want to think about some stronger medicine.

Keep in touch, maybe we can help her out.

By the way, I wouldn't suggest using a tank divider. If she has anything contagious like a parasite or fish TB she could still spread it to the other fish in the tank. Just get her out of there, follow my instructions above and watch.

Just in case it might help out more, do you have numbers for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate? Or do you see any other signs that she might be sickly, like loss of colour?
