Sick Rainbowfish and Hospital tank | |
fishsage Hobbyist Tank You Daddy. Posts: 103 Kudos: 53 Votes: 16 Registered: 08-Dec-2007 | Hi all, Well, we picked up a Bosemani Rainbowfish from WalMart of all places! Anyhoo, we've had her for about 48hrs, and noticed a white fungus type growth on her upper lip, So, here's what I did, and my rational.... let me know what else I need to do, and if my reasoning is correct! I set up our 10 Gallon with proper temp water (Dechlorinated with Stress-Coat), no gravel, Got a big airstone bubbling away, put in the heater, put a very low wattage incandescent in the hood, and added Pimafix, and Stress-zyme to the water. Once I double checked temp etc.... I added the fish to the tank. I don't have a cartridge for the aqueon filter that doesn't have carbon..... I may be able to get one tonight, but my thinking is that for the short term, she should be OK without a filter because of the airstone, and because she is the only fish in the tank. My thinking is that if I keep up with 20% WC every other day I can do this without a filter. Am I nuts? I can't honestly believe that just 2 weeks ago I had only a 55 gallon tank, and now I have a 20 gallon QT and a 10 gallon hospital tank! At least I feel somewhat prepared for the hobby now. Thanks! I should know I have had a lot of rainbows over the last few years, and I have 5 bosemanis right now. As for treating it, I would also add in melafix. And if it ends up getting to the point that those (Pima and Mela) dont work. Go with Furanase. It is extremely powerful and will kill the bacterial colony that keeps the tank cycled as well, but it will kill the fungus. sometimes in worse cases the fungus is internal as well as external. In that case the only solution is Furanase. I keep a bottle handy here just in case. I am sure Git will be along soon with more info. He helped me out quite a bit when I found this stuff on mine. mts.gif" border="0"> I vote do you? My Tanks at Photobucket |

The fungus is very difficult to see, it just looks like a fuzzy top lip. I'm gonna try and get some pictures. Short term dont annoy the fish with incessant water changes when ill, better to just ammolock it for the treatment period, but yeah with a rainbow in a tank that size you definitely want decent oxygenation. If it is flexibacter its quick growing , but also fast dying when youve beaten it, so give the treatments (probably take around a week) then observe the fish for around 3 more days, then it can go wherever you were gonna put it. Given the disease pit it probably came from, it would be better to give it a full one month quarantine, but I guess you could get that down to a couple of weeks if its not doing so well in the 10gal, and if you gave the fish a couple of days off after the furan is done and gave it a one off shot of jungle labs antiparasite formula you could probably get it into community without a major risk of disease issues.Im not big on pre-emptive treatments, but to be fair, there probably reasonable cause here. Rainbows have the two major weaknesses, being flexibacter and mycobacterium, aside from that they generally harbour relatively few diseases. |

She looks healthy to me (A novice at best!) But i'm still worried about putting her into community. I don't think it was flexibacter because it never did progress beyond a little bit of peach fuzz on her upper lip... no tufts or anything. The question is: If I put her into community and I notice the fungus coming back, is it instantly contagious to the other fish, or can I remove her to the hospital again quickly and save the rest of the fish???? 55G -5x Bosemani, 3x Emerald Cory,3x Red Rainbow, 3x Turquoise Rainbow. 20G-Empty. 10G -4x Danio 3x Cory Fry 1 Gold Mystery Snail. 10G- 1x CAE, 2x Tetra 1x ADF |

Not a known quantity im afraid. But if shes looking clear after 14 days id say her chances of being properly clear are pretty good. Tbh if she wasnt I think youd have noticed some acceleration in symptoms by know. Thats kind of an average guess, I dont think anyone could be truly conclusive about it. |
