Well I now have Ick. I read the disease profile here and saw that the meds are copper based and can kill Inverts and plants. Removing the plants is not really an option except as a last resort, The Shrimp I have I can move but is there any way to treat the tank in situ. I'll post the Parameters later tonight.

Logan-

What about treating with QuICK Cure: formaline and malachite green, will those have an effect on the plants, inverts?

That's what I used to get rid of the Ick in my 20g Tiger Barb species tank. It took awhile but I finally got rid of it.

I didn't have any ick meds when I posted this originally. The info I posted came from the Disease profile here at FP. Here is what I bought today.

Ich Attack
by Novalek
100% organic,
Active Ingredients
5% Naphthoquinone
95% Inactive Ingredients

btw it has spread to the Rainbows.

Later in the week I am ordering a Submersible UV Sterilizer to add into the tank.

Hmm, I checked Wikipedia for naphthoquinone, and it says it has anti-bacterial properties. Now, ich isn't a bacterium, but I checked the MSDS for naphthoquinone and it is some pretty heavy stuff (read: ultra-toxic in pure form, not to mention teratogenic). Apparently it inhibits mitotic division, so it shouldn't allow the ich to multiply, but at the dosages it is recommending it shouldn't be toxic to the fish, in theory.

Logan/Jim-

I'd hit the LFS and grab a formaline/malachite green based med and use it daily. Mine said cures Ich in three days, NOT. Ich has three different phases of it's life cycle. We can only kill the Ich in one particular stage so you have to treat the tank long enough for all the Ich to go through the stage where they can be killed. You'll have to treat for probably at least one week after the last of the white spots goes away.

With that med, take out anything in your decor that can be stained, sometimes it will leave some green streaks on rocks or substrate. Of course, remove the carbon filter media. My medication suggested a 25% WC every three treatment days, I backed off and did smaller WC less often. The white spots finally went away, and I treated 1.5 weeks after I saw the last spot.

I put the carbon back in and was able to add fish after a couple days... All has been well for a few weeks now in the tank. Also, I didnt have any live plants when I was medicating so I am not sure how the formaline/malchite green based meds would affect the plants. Git can certainly help you here...

Good luck man, it's definitely a patience thing, and a big time drag. I hope you don't lose any fish.

Well I started the Ich Attack last night and this stuff WORKS. As of today there are no spots visible. I am going to keep up with this for about a week and by friday I will have the UV steriliser ordered and it will be in in about one more week.
