Ammonia: 0.5 ppm
Nitrite (note the “I&#8221: 0
Nitrate (note the “A): 0
pH: 7.6
Temp: 78ºF

Tank Size: 2.5gal
Stock List (Quantity/Species): 1 young male Betta
Filtration: Biowheel included as part of tank setup (Marineland Explorer)

Hey Folks.

I have been keeping a close eye on my brand new Betta. Today, while I was watching some of the bubbles on the side of the tank, I noticed that they were moving!!

Now, I have not added anything other than my Betta to the tank. I did have 3 neons in the tank, but had thoroughly scrubbed the tank prior to adding this Betta.

These little critters are tiny, and I MEAN small. At first I thought that they might be fry, but after remembering that my Betta is male, and noticing that they are simply WAY too small to be fry, I dismissed the idea.

They appear to be white, and they move about the tank with relative speed for their size. They do not appear to be upsetting my Betta at all, in fact, I have witnessed him eat a few of them. I might almost associate them with the Sea Monkeys I used to keep as a child.

Any ideas?

I did a bit more research after learning about Planaria. Just as a followup, They do not strike me as being long enough to resemble Planaria.

I am also starting to think that because they are not bothering my Betta, that this might belong outside of the hospital forum (for that I apologize!)

Just a little update. Thanks everyone!

DanioMan,

You got snails

Ingo

PS: Seriously, what you describe clearly sounds like snails, but how did they get in?

Well I have heard of snails. I have never heard of them being this miniscule before. Are you sure that snails come in this size?

I mean, these things are so frickin' tiny its unbelievable. and they dart around the tank so fast! I first thought they were only on the walls of the tank, but after watching them further I can see that they do move in 3 dimension

I am fine with snails. As long as they will not hurt my little guy. He seems to be enjoying them as a tasty snack when he sees them.

Well, I didn’t know that they move in 3 dimensions. This would make it less likely to be snails.

They are very small when they hatch from the eggs, my Platy loves to pick them of the glass.
They also might “fall” off the glass and float to the bottom of the tank or wherever they land.
A current in the tank might even be able to move them sideways (depending on the strength of the current that could make it seem like they dart).

But if 3 dimensions also mean that your critters move from the bottom up, without a current to support this motion, I have to reverse and say that they are most likely not snails. This would mean that you are back to square one as I have no other idea of what else this could be.
