| Two dead cories | |
jodecii![]() Hobbyist Posts: 51 Kudos: 26 Votes: 0 Registered: 28-Jan-2006 ![]() | Just wondering. This morning I woke up and two of my cori catfish were dead?! They looked and seemed healthy yesterday Does anyone think it could be because I did a water change (25%) and added aquarium salt and they at it at the bottom. I am not sure if any of my fish would have killed them. After all I still have one lonesome cory left. He looks o.k. In my tank I have:2 dwarf gouramis 2zebra danios 3 danios of some sort and now 1 lonesome cori catfish ![]() |

I do not think that the change itself would have killed your fish. Did you add a dechlorinator to the water? I should note that salt is not good for Corydoras catfish, you said that they actually ate it? I'm not sure if ingesting salt outright kills fish, but it couldn't be good for them. Do you own a water test kit? If not, I would suggest either buying one or taking a water sample to a store for testing. It's important to know what your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are. Ammonia and nitrite are capable of killing fish in small amounts, and high nitrates are also very bad for fish. One last question, how large is your fish tank? Welcome to the boards, sorry it has to be in this context. ![]() |

I took my water the the store today and they said my nitrates are on the higher side but ok. Do you suggest that I do another partial water change today to try and lower the nitrate levels. I did add declor to my water. The guy at the store said my tank is probably coming close to the end of my cycle. I have been having my water tested all along especially before the addition of new fish. |

Any measurable amounts of ammonia or nitrite can kill Corydoras catfish, and high nitrates can lead to their death as well. If the tank isn't yet done cycling, it's usually best to wait on water changes until it's finished. In your case you may want to do a small water change to lower the salt and pollutant levels in the tank. If the water has no ammonia or nitrite, a larger change would be helpful. In any case, I would keep an eye on the fish to see if their behavior indicates a major problem. |

Hence all of the questions Now under the instruction a person who did not know what they were talking about (at least that is what other people say) she suggested that I add danios the day after I set up my tank which was about 3 weeks ago to help cycle it. When I learned that this was not a good thing I wnet and added bio-spira. The next day I went and had my water tested they said it was perfect so later that week I added my gouramis and corys. Yesterday I went to have my water tested just to see how things were going and they told me that it was time for a water change. So i did my water change (25% added de clor, and salt) This morning I woke up and 2 of my corys were dead. So I went and had my water tested again. (lots of leg work LOL) He said my nitrates were still a little high but one the safer side of high. He said its bc its coming to the end of its cycle. Which does make sense if I hadent added bio-spira which I thought was almost an instant cycler. So I think my tank is already cycled it is just spiking for some reason. But then again I am new at this so I could be totally wrong. So do you think I should do a partil water change? Thanks for all your advise I really appriciate it. Sorry for all the typos I am typing fast! ![]() |

Salt is bad for cory cats, so you definitely don't need to add it any more. If you can get the nitrates down, then chances are that the rest of your fish will be fine. Just to check, did you see anything strange on the cories when you first noticed they were dead? |
