desiredusername Enthusiast Posts: 182 Kudos: 99 Votes: 36 Registered: 26-Sep-2006 | 3 days ago i bought a school of 12 neons from the LFS. I fed them on spirulina vegie flakes and a small amount of bloodworms. This afternoon 2 neons dead with what looks like bloodworm coming out of them. Are neons not suppposed to eat bloodmorms? Or is this some sort of infection? |

What does your water chemistry look like (NH3, NO2, NO3, pH, hardness, etc.), how did you acclimate them, how big is the tank, and what are the other inhabitants? Joe Potato |

Same as when they eat algae, it turns greenish or bluish. Did you quarantine the new fish? New fish should always be quarantined for 21 days minimum prior to adding to your main tank, it can prevent spread of infection that can wipe out your whole tank stock. If you bought the neons and they died within a couple days, Id suspect poor quality stock. My last concern, if they died with "what looks like a bloodworm coming out of them", check this picture below, it is of Camallanus worms, one of the most deadly and dreaded and hard to treat infections in tropical fish. http://www.rhusmann.de/aqua/bilder/camallan.jpg Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

I acclimated the fish for 3/4 of an hour . So very sneaky; the worm doesn't look like that ccamallanus worm. No other deaths so far, infact all fish seem happy. I have stopped feeding them bloodworms for the moment. |

Im lucky in that the neons my fave LFS sells come from a good local breeder, and have a great success rate. Ive had only minimal success with neons from commercial fish farms - ntd runs rampant as well as other diseases, over medication and inbreeding. Its unfortunate actually. Im glad the worms dont look like camallanus! Phew, my worst fish nightmare Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |
