I have been reading various things about velvet and the way it looks, and I had a few questions.

When shining a flashlight to the fish, would velvet appear to be a metallic gold sheen?

And how fast can Velvet 'attack' a fish? If stress causes it, can signs be noticed later that same day?

Does anyone have pictures (or know where some are) of Velvet? I haven't had much luck in finding any.

Christina

EDIT: I will add more info about my fish and this scenario:

My info:
I have had my Betta for about a week now, and I did a 30% water change yesterday (filtered tank). I left and came home, and I thought he was dead. I turned on the lights, and realized he was just lethargic and had lost color. I read some online and came accross Velvet. He seemed to have some rough metallic gold areas around his gills.
I then grabbed a flashlight and noticed his whole body/fins have a gold sheen. His ventral fins only have the gold on the outer edges. (He is blue, purple, and green...and his ventral fins are red.) (Oh, and the rough areas around his gills looks more red w/ the flashlight.) As time passed, he was gaining some color and being a tad more active. But he has been 'leaning' against the filter parts in the water, and he seems to be jerky (?) in his swimming.

As I have 4 tanks and haven't been overly cautious about cross contamination, I looked in my 55 gallon. My 2 F Red Velvet Swordtails and 1 M Orange Wagtail seemed to have some shimmery gold around their gills and fin edges.

I have Maracide, so I went ahead and dosed the Betta's tank. I know Velvet can be quick and deadly....I don't want to stress the fish w/ med's, but... Does this sound like Velvet? Should I hold off on the rest of the tanks to see if it gets worse? Or if the Betta improves, that may be my answer...

I will be using Rid Ich + or Maracide in my other tanks if it is Velvet. Is one better? I noticed Rid Ich doesn't mention Velvet....??

Whereas ich appears to look like salt granules, velvet has more a consistency of talcum powder. It can appear white, greyish, or gold, so to answer
would velvet appear to be a metallic gold sheen?
= Yes

As with ich, everything can appear all normal and then it seems overnight it's there in full force. I don't know of a specific timeline, but if the parasite is already there working on the fish, I suppose its possible. Not all fish have to be stressed to contract diseases or illnesses, it just helps the particular pathogen/parasite out tremendously.

I haven't heard much back, but I'll update.

I went ahead and have treated the Betta, so today will be the 3rd dose of Maracide.
The day following the first dose, he seemed to look and act better. I'm going to be keeping an eye on him to see if he improves or changes. And I am keeping a close eye on my other tanks.
