Hi all. My favorite fish (African Butterfly Fish) has a wierd growth on the bottom of his left fin. Its greenish brown. Ammonia = 0, Nitrate = 0, and its only been 8 days since last w/c. So can anyone identify this or perhaps suggest a treatment?

Thanks Alot in advance

Chris

It almost sounds like an algae, but on a fish?

OK I know you say you just did a water change, but can you get the water parameters for us? Not good/great/excellent, but the numbers would be good just too rule out bad water conditions...

How long has this tank been set up? What else is being kept with the fish?

You say that it is a brownish/greenish growth on the bottom of the left fin, right? So besides color let's try and get a description, since a camera isn't available...

Is it hairy? Is it just the fin is changing colors? Is there a lump? A hole? Maybe a strange mass? How big is it? Is it possible that he could have scratched up against something? Maybe another fish decided to take a bite out of him?

I know it's not a cure all, but I'd add some Melafix to the tank and treat with it (yes, it smells good on the bottle, and yes, after awhile it makes the tank smell a bit funky, sorry) till we can figure out what it actually is...and it won't hurt the fish

I figured it out. It was arublis or something like that. A crustean parasite. I just picked him off the fish and the fish seems much better now
