I have recently got three white cloud mountain minnows and one of them has got really dark - almost black where as the other two are still a silvery colour. Also it's mouth seems to be a strange shape. Any suggestions?

Well this will be a tricky one. What rolls of my head first is mycobacterium, it can cause deformities of the skull,NTD, tends to cause muscular deformity rather than skeletal deformity. If it is mycobacterium you should treat it seriously- check the disease profile for details on treatment. The colouration could be part of a disease or just stress reaction from an injury. Renal damage will also cause discolouration, so theres another reason that mycobacterium springs to mind.

It could also be an injury or a genetic deformity. Any chance you could post a pic so that I can get a good look at it? It will help a great deal, even a fuzzy one will do to help a little.

I don't know about the mouth or any potential illness, but I do know that males typically have a darker coloration than females. When they are competing with other males (displaying and whatnot) or trying to impress females, the difference is definitely noticeable. Males are skinnier than egg-carrying females, and often have very obvious greenish markings on the pelvic, anal, and dorsal fins. Does it look like that is the case here?

And, welcome to the site.
