I have a Black Skirt Tetra in my 30 gallon aquarium. It has what my fish book calls "furunculosis." They are red sores on the fishs body and it also has some raised bumps. What is the best medicine for this problem?? Thanks for all of your help!!!!

Its basically bacterial ulcers, if that is indeed what the fish has.

It is often caused by an Aeromonas bacteria, which are not wimpy bugs by any stretch. You would need a pretty hefty antibiotic.

Do you think you could just run through some details of what you are seeing, maybe give us an idea of how long this took to develop and how your tank is set up? temperatures, cycling, filters etc, and what your stocking and quarrantine is like...?

Furunculosis will systematically travel through the bloodstream and affects all parts of the body, especially the vital organs...

It will multiply rapidly in the bloodstream and cause small blood vessels to rupture, allowing the bacteria to spread to surrounding tissue. In this advanced stage, the disease is always fatal.

Save your money on external antibiotics. They do nothing. Medicated-antibiotic food may be the best bet if the bacterial infection is not too advanced.
