hi

i have three discus (two tangerine and one brown) that i've had for almost three years.

i think that one of the tangerines and the brown may have formed a mating pair, but i've yet to see any eggs.

anyhow, the other tangerine seems to be breathing a little more rapidly and heavily than the other two. he's not gasping or showing other signs of stress, but there is a bit of a difference. the "pair" do pester him once in a while, but they aren't persistant about it. they all get along generally.

my water quality (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, etc...) is fine, and the temp is between 80-82F.

is this any cause for concern, or do individual fish breath differently?

thanks!

If there is any sign of swelling or discoloration in the fishes gills, he may have an infection. My favorite betta just got over a serious gill infection that almost killed her. It started as just a little rapid breathing, but it ballooned into a very noticeable infection because the little flaps that protect her gills stuck out like a collar. However, I do not have any expertise in this disease or with fish other than bettas. You may want to just keep watch over him and let us know if anything else happens. If you do treat the fish, I recommend products by Mardel (mardell) mainly Maracyn-two. Hope I was a little help!! Best Wishes!
