Hey all- my betta which I bought and received today looks as though there is black stuff surrounding his gills its almost like organs pulsating... if anyone can help me please what is it and if its nothing I am glad please feel free to tell me that I am overprotective of my baby!!!

ph is 7 the tank is 5 gallons and he is the only fish there... there is a filter as well and a light which I removed so that he would have better access to oxygen... any suggestions

Honey, are you sure he isn't just flairing his gills at you to show you who the boss of the tank is? They do that....is it by the gills? Does he "puff" them out and they flutter? I'm thinking he's just showing his pride in his new home...Relax and enjoy him, and oh put the filter back in the tank, just have it on the lowest settingheidi

I was hoping that was it, but I wasnt sure... I had never noticed it on my other bettas... the filter is back on, thanks for the help heidi:%)
