he's laying on the rocks and against the side of the bowl lately. He doesn't look to have ich or fin rot but he's been acting odd lately.

Is he breathing heavily, bloated, or just not moving. What size tank is it etc ?

Do a 100% water change with declorinator and 1/2 tsp of aquarium salt per gallon. That would be a start...and as Lee suggested maybe some more info.

did the water change and dechlorinizer, he's in something close to one gallon. He seems to like to rest at the top just under the water and has also been "sinking" to the bottom and lying there. When i feed him or go near he seems active though. Like i think i said he doesn't seem to have ich or anything like that, no fin rot. He's always been a little light and now its like his rear end floats sometimes and he turns funny or bends in an odd sideways manner. I would put him in his own 10g but i just made a mistake irresponsibly and purchased different fish for it.

I'm guessing he's by himself. This may sound daft, but try putting a portable mirror by his bowl. As we all know males go for other male bettas.

This may spark curiousity in your betta. Don't worry about him flaring. Apparently this activity is good for the bettas confidents if he challanges his own reflection thinking its another male. Just dont forget to remove the mirror after an hour or so. That way they dont click that its just themselves - silly beggers:%)

Is he any better? If not, how old is he? What are you feeding him? How often do you change his water? How much do you change? What is the temp of the water? Do you always dechlorinate?
