i need to move a juvenile discus ( 3" ) to a quarantine tank(2.5usg), i have a suitable heater but the only spare filter i have creates too much current. would the single fish be ok under treatment without a filter and daily/twice daily water changes?
and should i change with clean water or water from the community tank it is comming from?

Sponge filter with two way gang valve to reduce airflow?

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

yup ive seen those, they sort of have a fluted water outlet , I can see how that makes things difficult - not much would attach to it.A lot of people have complained about fish getting sucked into those too.

I suppose you could perforate the hell out of a plastic drip tray and have the upturned flow head aim on top on top of it or something.Aside from elastic banding some sponge or wadding over the nozzle , im a bit stuck for tips on this one.

Failing that buy an eheim aquaball, they are quieter, and have adjustable flow. Not that expensive either.Since the spare media wont be cycled anyway, you could buy a new filter. Perhaps a tank partition is the way to go if its fighting thats causing him to be ill. What was wrong with him incidentally?

If its a highly infectious disease you might need to treat the whole tank anyway, there might not be much point in moving him.

too late for the fish in question, it was a fungal infection that had been treated successfully in the main tank but this 1 fish wasnt responding to the treatment so i was going to quarentine and treat more heavilly using stronger meds. but the move to quarantine finished him off.
all is well and clear in the main tank now though.
just ned to sort this filter issue ready for next time i need it.

You can run the filter in your existing tank to get the media up to speed, but the only real solution is to have a small quarantine tank on standby if youre expecting this kind of trouble again. That basically means running another tank, and getting it cycled. Sounds like like the filter you have isnt really up to the job, so rather than ruin it trying to modify it, clean it up and stick it on ebay or something.

Id recommend the eheim aquaball, cos their about £30 , the powerhead is the same on all models with adjustable flow, and you can add or remove extra filter compartments as you wish. You couldnt ask for a more flexible little filter.

ok its annoying , and you might not wanna run another tank, but what else are you gonna do?
