I think you would be able to find clove oil at a herbal/vitamin/health type store.

The local health food store went out of buiness a couple months ago, so I went on a road trip today. Found clove oil at a vitamin/health type store, 6 bucks for an oz. Much better than 6 bucks for 1/8 oz. at a pharmacy! It was made from clove buds rather than leaves or stems, so it's potency could be less, but if smell is any indication, it should be strong enough to do the trick

Yes, you can overdose on the MS222 and clove oil to bring about death, but how readily available is MS222 or Clove oil....and how much for an overdose? Is overdosing that stuff to cause death cost effective? I would go along with using them as "knock out" anethesia prior to using vodka or something, but the ms222 and clove oil are just too expensive, imo , to use only by themselves on a regular basis.

I'll have to stick with what i said earlier.. 1 ml clove oil per gallon until they're laying on their side knocked out, and then 9 ml vodka per gallon until dead. Cost effective and not cruel in any way that I know of.

The most humane methods are MS222 (an anesthetic) and clove oil, NO VODKA. Other than the violent ones like crushing, piercing the brain etc.

Freezing ranks among the least humane, so I've heard.

Can you get ahold of maybe a rubbermaid container??? do a treatment in that, if you can find a heater and a filter/airstone thatd be great.

The only fish that needed to be euthanized was a black neon who came to me with a half missing face. He struggled for over a week, healing, before I came home to all the healing had regressed. We put him in a bag of ice water and he stopped moving instantly. To make sure the fish is dead, put it in the freezer for an hour or two.

It's free and easy, but I don't know if freezing or clove oil/alcohol would be easiest or more humane.

I'm so sorry for you and your poor gourami. *hugs*

I found some at the pharmacy called "red cross toothache medication". What you're looking for are those little dental tooth-ache " kits" or cavity filling " kits". On the little bottle that comes with it, it should say " Euganol - 85% active ingredient". That is clove oil. You can grab a baby medication dropper that has ml to dose out 1 ML of the stuff , and mix it into a gallon jug of water. That will be about 1/3 of this tiny bottle, and the tiny bottle costs about 6 USD, so don't toss out the clove oil water, hehe. Pour some into a container big enough for the fish to be submerged in , add the fish and give it a few seconds for the fish to become anesthetized ( knocked out). Drop in 9 cc or ml ( same difference) of vodka. After 30 seconds, should be all over.

Good luck. Having a fish die sucks, and having to kill one that won't get better is even harder. Hope it works out for the best.

Someone here once said you can put the fish in some water, then put it in the freezer b/c the cold will sedate the fish b/f it actually freezes to death.

I've never tried it, but since you don't have any alcohol that might be a humane option .

I realize you have decided to euthanize but what about isolating the fish in a bucket or large bowl while you decide what to do so as not to spread the problem ?

The chlorine and various household chemicals would burn its skin all the way up until it gets to a treatment facility where it will be ground up alive. Sloshing around in chlorine, bleach, maybe a bit of clog opener ( that stuff will burn through a shirt), over the course of minutes, hours, or days until the gruesome end. If anyone flushes live fish to " end ' their suffering, I certainly don't want to hear about it either, as it is definitely not euthenasia.

As far as the clove oil ( euganol ) and vodka, you add the clove oil first, which will knock out the fish. Addition of the vodka will end the fish's life. Without access to veterinary medicine, that's the most humane way I have seen used.

People say they've found clove oil in the spice section of the grocery store, but I sure haven't. You can look there, but the only place I've seen it is in tiny bottles in the ambesol / toothache medicines area. You'll have to look at the ingredients, but usually the little bottle that comes with do-it-yourself tooth kits ( cavity filler, pain stopping kits or whatever) lists euganol as the active ingredient, 85% content.

Flushing a fish that is still alive is just about the cruelest thing you can do to it. Think before you type, Boil.

Flushing the fish is put of the question, plain and simple. My sister is looking for real answers. If you make any more posts suggesting to flush the fish I will report them.

my large blue gourami (who i named Ricardo for an unknown reason ) has had strange worms coming from his butt (or whatever it is on fish, cant remember name...) anywho, ive tried treating these little parasites many times. he wont take the medicated flakes and liquids dont work. from my experience, the worms seem to be uncurable, only preventable by removing the infected fish. but since i have no other tank to keep him in, thats not an option. bringing him to a store is, obviously, not an option, either.

i just noticed today that the worms, which were once fewer, i could only see about 3, now have grown to about ten. this worries me because the worms may spread. so i have decided to euthanize Mr. Ricardo. now i need help deciding how.

i cant behead him, he's so big i couldnt do it fast enough and so its inhumane. i could freeze him, but thats too slow and painful. so nat (cory addict) suggested i use alcohol of some sort (seems quick) but i have no idea how

thanx for any input

If you were going to kill him anyway, have you tried coppersafe(tm) from Mardel? It's chealted copper so not good for inverts and some plants, and should be used in a QT tank. It's heck on the parasites though.
