Can anyone help me? My gouramis have white long string-like things about five to ten centimetres coming out of their buttocks ] . They are not eating and very lethargic. I've treated them with fluke and tapeworm tablets and since then, 1 dwarf gourami, 4 britle nose catfish, a rainbow shark and 2 silver shark have died.

tapeworm???

It sounds like your fish have anchorworm, a not-uncommon fish parasite.

Someone will be with you shortly to discuss treatment because the book I have is 30 years old...

Is it forked at the end? 5-10 cm is pretty long for a anchor worm. Are they anywhere else on the body?

1. Whitish, flat, elongated segments are seen coming from the anus. Or in fecal matter, several segments.

Cause:Your fish are affected with a Tape Worm.

Med: Treat fish with Paracide-X, -or- Mix up some frozen food with Paracide-D and feed to the fish for 3-5 days.

2. The feces is long, white and stringy. The feces contain elongated eggs with champagne-cork-like covers.

Cause: Your fish are affected with Capillaria Worms.

Med: Treat with Paracide-D -or- Paracide-X.

Other meds can be use if these are not available at your LFS.

If you used a product called "Clout" that's why the fish died...

Some fish can withstand the product, sometimes used for Anchorworm, while others just die within a day or less.

Thanks for all your replies! They have been very helpful. I've tried a cure for tapeworm already but it didn't work, so now i'll try the paracide-x or d for capillaria worms that JTF mentioned. That sounds like the problem. Thanks again for all your replies .

Be advised that weak, non-eating fish will not tolerate parasite meds, if indeed that's the problem.

There may be liver damage which produces white droppings.
