I found this an intresting bit of news that has come out of the disaster riddled SE Asia.

"Sri Lankan wildlife officials are stunned -- the worst tsunami in memory has killed around 22,000 people along the Indian Ocean island's coast, but they can't find any dead animals.

Giant waves washed floodwaters up to 2 miles inland at Yala National Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards.

"The strange thing is we haven't recorded any dead animals," H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of the national Wildlife Department, told Reuters Wednesday.

"No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit," he added. "I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening."

Yala, Sri Lanka's largest wildlife reserve, is home to 200 Asian Elephants, crocodile, wild boar, water buffalo and gray langur monkeys. The park also has Asia's highest concentration of leopards. The Yala reserve covers an area of 391 square miles, but only 56 square miles are open to tourists.

At least 40 tourists, including nine Japanese, were drowned at Yala.

The tsunami was triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean Sunday, which sent waves up to 15 feet high crashing onto Sri Lanka's southern, eastern and northern seaboard, flooding whole towns and villages, destroying hotels and causing widespread destruction."

lil_mikey, I heard that on the radio this afternoon...Isn't that kind of weird? But, usually animals tend to take cover when something bad is coming too Anyways...Heidi

I heard of fish jumping out of the tanks when a hurricane or tsunami comes. Dont know why, maybe it's just a rumor?

Since we live in a pretty rural area, you can always tell when it's about to rain or storm around here because all the cows group together and lay down.. Whenever we're driving and see that, we know weather's coming..

[font color="#C00000"] Funny you say that Oleta. I told an old bus driver about that same thing and he didn't believe me. Sky was crystal clear that day, but I told him it was going to rain because of how the cows were acting. He laughed at me. But then later that day he apologized to me, soaked in the rain.

Animals should never be taken for granted. They know more than we'll ever know sometimes. *shrugs*

Anyone else find the title of this subject ironic?

I could always tell the weather was going to change by my first Great Dane's ears. She had natural ears and if they started to move back I knew we were going to get a storm within 12 hours. (this from the same dog who slept through a 5.3 earthquake)

Hmmm... Elephants are able to communicate with very deep sounds through the ground, and are therefore probably able to even hear an earthquake. That'd be cool if there were some sort of study about meteorological senses different animals have.

most animals have been around alot longer than us.

I dont think we got any knowledge from being cave men, all they knew is that if they cant eat it, they cant reproduce with it, there is no good to it.
