Anyone here play Dungeons and Dragons? I'm curious because I just started playing it with some guys at school, and it is pretty fun. So, anyone here into it? Are there any pointers you could give me, or are you all satisfied to let me die?

the only pointer for playing d&d: have fun with it.

also, if you like it, think about buying the rule book as well as supplements for whatever type of characters you really like.

I like the d&d based rpgs on the computer. Neverwinter nights, baldur's gate, etc. I'd probably play if I knew anyone around here who did.

As for pointers, well you can just go ahead and die... it seems on the rpg's it's usually best to have a very specialised character. Like if you have a fighter, have him be good with one weapon, not 5. that sort of thing. Hit points are important to close combat players, not so much to mages.

I play on a pretty regular basis and DM[Dungeon Master] pretty regularly. My specialty has been to develop characters that can't be hit (REALLY high AC [Armor Class]). Anything you fight has to roll to see if it hits you every single time. If you can develop a REALLY high AC quickly, while you're still battling lesser characters, they just flat out can't hit you unless they crit (critical[19-20 natural on the die depending on the weapon they use])...

As for anything else, I recommend getting a ranged weapon (bow, crossbow, sling, etc.) to use so that you can get a first hit in on anything you spot that's a distance off. If you can get the shot off before the enemy spots you, it's a surprise attack, which means that whatever amount of damage you do doubles (e.g. you do 4 points of damage, because it's a surprise attack, you do 8 points of damage)...

Other than that, develop one nice weapon that is one-handed (such as a scimitar). Try to buy one that's a +1 or more in a town, even if it leaves you broke. With weapons such as these, you determine the amount of damage you do by rolling out whatever specific die you need to (such as a d6) and then add your strength modifier. To up your strength modifier, try to find some bracers of strength or something along that line in a town. (The availability of the items I'm listing depends on how good/nice your DM[Dungeon Master] is. If they're not so nice, they just won't have anything available except for a dagger and your fists ) Get the best one-handed weapon you can initially to use, and then keep on the lookout for another nice one-handed weapon. When you get this one, just keep it in your gear and begin surviving while you add feats to your repertoire (You get new ones at 4th and 7th level[I believe]). For your new feats, add Power Attack, Cleave, and greater Cleave (in that order). Power Attack allows you to use Cleave. Cleave allows you to attack one guy, and if you kill him, you get to attack another guy on the same turn. Greater Cleave allows you to continue this pattern until you don't kill someone on one of your attacks (So if you face a party of 12 guys and kill 9 of them on your first attack, this can make a large battle much simpler )...

Well, there's a couple tips. I think I'll stop being a complete nerd now I'll try to check on here in the next week to see if there're any updates, but with how unpredictable my schedule is, if you update and get no responses for a few days, email me...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

My guy is a fighter, with (I think) Power Attack, Cleave, and something else. I have a one-handed weapon (Bastard Sword), and I was looking for a shield/another weapon to use. So far I'm in the middle of the first quest/thing, (we meet weekly), with nowhere to buy items. So, I should get a bow or something? Any particular kind?

-Find another one-handed weapon and try to scrounge some armor of some kind (I believe a fighter should be able to wear just about any type of armor) off of someone you kill. I'm fond of a scimitar, but any one-handed weapont aht you can scrounge off of a kill will work nicely for the time being...

-As for the ranged weapon, I recommend a longbow of some kind, but your DM should be able to review with you what all weapons would work. As a last resort, a sling works (I believe you actually get to factor your strength modifier into its hits), but longbows are pretty nice...
