And your rolled oats/oatmeal are like whole squashed oats?

2CUPS BUTTER!!!!!!!!!!!

How are you people not as fat as americans!

hmmmmm any chance I can get a good example of what this dessicated coconut business is....both of those described just doing them like spoon drops, guess the rolling had little to do with my failure...couldave been the differnt "golden syrup" and is the water supposed to be activly boiling

2. Mix all the dry ingredients. Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in boiling water.
3. Melt the butter with the golden syrup. Add the bicarbonate of soda mixture.
4. Add the liquid mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix well.
5. Place tablespoons of the mixture on the tray. Bake for 20 minutes, or until golden.

Another one from a weekend magazine:

Anzac biscuits

Are Anzac biscuits unique to Australia? How will we ever know?
But along with pavlova and lamingtons, we lay claim to them, even though they're based on borrowed ideas.

Ingredients (makes about 20 biscuits)

125g butter
1 tbsp golden syrup
2 tbsp boiling water
1 tsp bicarbonate soda
200g (1 cup) sugar
125g (1 cup) plain flour
100g (1 cup) rolled oats
60g (1 cup) dessicated coconut

Method

• Preheat oven to 150C. Grease a couple of baking trays or line them with non-stick baking paper.
• Melt the butter in a small pan, add the syrup, water and soda - it will bubble up. In a mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients. Pour the butter mixture over the dry ingredients and mix well to combine.
• Dollop spoonfuls of the mixture, about 4cm apart, on a greased baking tray, flattening them slightly. Bake for about 20 minutes.

Tip: Use shredded or flaked coconut for a biscuit with more texture. In a recipe from 1917, the rolled oats are omitted while in another from 1945, the dough is kneaded like bread and called parkin or cocky's joy, so there are endless variations you can make to the basic mixture.

I have made them a few times, but as I don't have any scales and was making a wild educated guess at how much butter, or it could be I was using a convection microwave oven, they didn't spread like they usually do. And I only had to cook them for 10 min, but they were really yummy and chewey. Now I'm just thinking about playing around, adding ginger and choc chips, maybe dropping the ammount of golden syrup if I do that. Maybe try them with some cinnamon added too. Hmmm, I want anzacs now...

female australia au-newsouthwales
1 cup plain flour
1 cup rolled oats (NOT instant/quick outs, you end up with golf balls)
3/4 cup dessicated coconut
3/4 cup caster sugar
125g butter
1 tablespoon golden syrup
1 1/2 teaspoon bicarb soda
2 tablespoons boiling water

Oven @ 150*C (300*F)

Combine dry ingredients.

Combine butter and golden syrup in small pan on stove and stir over high heat til melted.

Mix bicarb with boiling water.

Add bicarb mix to butter mix

Add wet mix to dry mix and stir until combined.

shape into tablespoon-size balls and place on prepared baking tray, leaving room for spreading (about 2" apart)

Bake for 15-20 mins or until crisp and golden.

ALL MEASUREMENTS AUSTRALIAN METRIC (all the same except tablespoon i believe, its 20mL, whereas i think UK is 15mL)

1 AU tablespoon = 3 teaspoons = 1/8th cup

I love anzac bikkies soft and chewy. I think you bake them for less time to make em chewy. Most biscuits come out of the oven soft and crisp up as they cool.

Biscuits in Australia and probably UK means cookies. Bikkies is a diminutive term; often used by small children and women though not exclusively of course, if you are a guy and a bit of softy you could still say it and seem "awwww cute".

Also term "big bikkies" means a lotta dough/cash
