I go swimming in the pond at my parents' cabin all the time. There's channel cat, large mouth bass, a few grass carp and blue gill in it and we've never had a problem with them nibbling. The fry that hang out around the dock will nibble your fingers tho, but it only tickles.

However, the snapping turtle that my dad caught and mauled with a canoe paddle is a different story

That is awful gartenzwerfe! Why would you just "maul" something for no reason. It was in IT'S home, not yours... you were the intruders! Killing for fun is not humorous!

My family has a cabin in the Adks upstate NY which is right on a lake that flows into a pond. We go swimming, jet skiing, water skiing, tubing, etc. in it all the time. There are TONS of sunfish in there who most of the time act quite stupid. For some bizarre reason we had 1 summer where people seemed to be complaining of them nibbling and biting, but nothing serious, and it was only that one summer. Maybe theres just a food shortage? Either way, I think its cruel they are removing them from their natural habitat...

You think THAT'S cruel? See ABC's accompanying story, "Florida Man Hits Girlfriend With 3-Foot Alligator During Argument" ( http://abcnews.go.com/wire/US/ap20040717_876.html ). He's been charged on "misdemeanor charges of battery and possession of an alligator." Not a word about cruelty to animals.

That's kinda funny. (the killer sunfish, not the animal abuse thing)

I've always thought it'd be cool to have a huge tank with sunfish and yellow perch in it. Or, based on that article maybe some sunfish and pirahnas. lol

Yes Bruce... yet another example of mankind's stupidity and willingness to overlook cruelty to animals. It really is quite odd to me that humans are supposed to be such intelligent creatures, and yet as a whole, they think they are the only things on this earth that feel anything. Such a shame! I personally believe that you can learn an awful lot about a person by how they treat animals. It does not say a whole lot for mankind in general though, does it?! ]

Stormy, I think the snapping turtle mentioned in the second post bit someone, and snapping turtles can bite HARD...

ie hard enough to send someone to the hospital for stiches if not blood transfusions...

Is a bite worth being mauled to death? Once again I note... they were intruding in the turtle's home, not the other way around. It was doing what came natural and protecting itself. I know how hard they bite. They can very easily remove fingers... thus said, avoid them! Don't go into their area and figure... well, if one bites me I will just beat it to death. Should an animal be subjected to a cruel and tortuous death because it followed it's instincts and protected itself. Somehow I am more than certain the turtle did not go hunting them down looking to bite someone. I just do not find mauling a defenseless (no matter how hard they can bite they are pretty defenseless in this situation) animal justifiable or humorous! If I walk into someone's yard and their dog bites me, should I take a baseball bat and beat it to death? Ummm... NO! Same difference!

didn't say the paddle killed it either... probably whalloped it hard enough to get it to let go... you're reading a lot into that... And as for us being in its territory, it could easily be in a recreational area and someone was swimming and stepped on it... accidents do happen, don't go yelling at people until you have the whole story...

Stormy, I never did say if it was killed or not. Secondly, it was my dad, not me. He happens to be a forester and cares for nature very much. In fact my whole family is very conscious about animals and invading their home. However, nature lover or not, when a snapping turtle is attached to you, you don't just stand there and let it be. I understand your concern, but that being said, could we please drop it?

As for the bluegill in tanks, my aunt caught a few of the fry from our pond and put them in her aquarium. They did quite well. She enjoyed them, until they got too big and were relocated back to their original home.

"caught and mauled"

That does not imply mauling for biting. Was he fishing with his finger?

If we can't keep this on topic it will have to be closed. Please drop all references to mauling she explained it best she can and should not be held accountable for her dad. My parents have done many things in life that I certainly can't change including killing a cat. We are our own people with our own beliefs

Empty chairs at empty tables, the room silent, forlorn.

Back to the topic, the link at the top didn't work for me before, but just now it did. This is why I haven't swum in anything but a bathtub or swimming pool for about 6 years... if something even as small as a bluegill bit me I'd probably jump 20 feet into the air!

I'm going to my cabin this weekend so I'll check to see if it turns out to be a killer sunfish summer or not.
