What kinds of freshwater tropical fish can be found in Australia's waters? I know that there is at least one species of rainbowfish there, but what else, if anything, can be found? Just curious.

Fiddler Crabs?

I love gudgeons.

They are very intelligent and have 10x the personality of most cichlids. I trained one at work to jump about 6" out of the water to take crickets from my fingers.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

We have dozens of rainbows, gudgeons and gobies.
Several species of grunters.
Tandanus sp.
Freshwater swordfish (freshwater, brackish and saltwater.)
Lung fish.
Barramundi.
I've missed a fair few but it will give you a general idea of what we have.

Our freshwater fish numbers are low compared to any other country and they aren't seen in collections over seas too often.
It should stay that way.

All right, thanks. I take it that going on a fish collection trip doesn't happen often there? I've never heard an Australian member mention doing so.

Dave does it all the time.

I'm in the city, but go out regularly to collect feeders.

In order to get the good stuff, you have to know where to go, and none of them are anywhere near me not for the fish/critrers i'd like to keep anyway!

(well, there are some marine gobies I'd like, but I have nowhere to put them

One i'd like to see now that it's no longer declared extinct and there are some wild ones actually alive that have been discovered since the Lake Eacham fiasco, is the Lake Eacham Rainbowfish.

I'd also like to see Neoceratodus forsteri, the Australian Lungfish. Shini covered it in a RFOTW thread once.

"Blue Eyes" are related to Rainbowfishes.

This site is probably one of the best that covers the Rainbowfishes and allies that I've seen. And covers three different Genera of "Blue Eyes", namely Kiunga, Pseudomugil and Scaturingichthys.

Enjoy browsing!

No, especially not if you've got permits and all that.

It's only illegal if you get caught.
I only take fish that are reasonably common and I only keep what I need.
I don't believe in permits and all that junk.
The trick to not getting caught is to collect in places that are very difficult to get to.
