Right now it's tiled. The whole house is hard wood floors except the basement. My wife and I decided that carpet would be best down there because it would be the only room in the house with it. Also remember that I'm in New Mexico. The tank doesn't add a whole lot of moisture to the room as it is always too dry anyway. I usually run a humidifier. We will probably tile behind the bar and not carpet under the tank.

Anyway, I worked on the basement model some more last night. I mannaged to fit the tank and game table but had to remove the big comfy chair. Depending on how cramped it is we may even be able to fit the chair in a corner or something.

This is the arangement I like:

Here is another arangement:

I will probably try some tile/carpet designs.

*holding his knees from bumping into the table*

Okay I'm working on a more drastic design. In this design I would be putting the tank inbetween the workshop and the basement. I started to model the basement and rearanged the room without the tank (it will be in the wall). I only got the workshop dimensions worked out.

I forgot to add the dog bed, but that can be put anywhere, the big comfy chair is the dog's chair anyway.

One problem though. See if I make the tank so you can see it from both rooms, I'll have to remodel the workshop too. Well at least a coat of paint and some rearanging of the furniture.

Reiko, Reiko, Reiko *shakes head sadly*

I'm going to have to torch that table!.

Even getting in-direct light you may likely have issues with the tank against the glass like that, nothing a little extra attention wont' fix...but goodness man think of all the bruises people will get from walking into the table .

Okay iltat, I rendered this for you on my lunch break.

You may regret your offer to help with this I'm discussing knocking out the wall and building the whole tank into the wall with shelves and such!

Okay I'll try that in the model. I'm a little worried about putting them in front of the window, but it's a north facing one so it shouldn't be too bad as far as direct sunlight.

*switches the location of the dog bed and the tank in the top rendering*

Sorry, I'd put the tank where I could see it as soon as I walk into the room. More dramatic that way and could make for a great entrance when showing it off to the buddies...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

As for the sockets, that door to the [edit]right[/edit] is to my water heater. I can get water and electricity to the bar from the wall it's connected to

The way I normaly sit in that desk I'll be looking almost directly toward the tank. My wife will be looking out the window. We are also getting new blinds (not in the model yet) for the basemnt windows. The kind we are looking at open top down so we can get more light but keep the privacy.

Yes the table is a pre-made one. I didn't want one that would come apart. The chairs also will be pushed in most of the time. I just left them pushed out in the model so I could see if we could sit at them.

Thanks by the way for all the opinions. They really help.

Sitting with your Back to the tank !

Reiko man the nitrogen is for the robot !

I think the first of those to really is the best....in the second the table really blocks the door. I'm assuming that's a premade table (the round one) but if it could be designed to fold or collapse somehow that would allow for it to be stored away (maybe behind the bar) when it's not in use it'll make the flow into the room more direct to the fish tank.

Maybe get the windows tinted so that they reflect the room and thereby the fishtank .

It depends on where you are and the building codes. Would you want electrical outlets close to the bar? I see those doorways there and I believe there is a code that states a certain distance electrical outlets have to be from openings. Unless you slide the bar over to the other side... by the windows.

Okay I got this urge to build myself a 180G tank. In order to convince my wife to allow me to get this big a tank she wanted to remodel the basement (incorperating the tank as part of it). I decided I would model the basement using a program called Sketchup.

Here is the model of the basement now:

Here is the model with a new corner desk, paint and a bar:

We also wanted to add a game table and, of course, the tank. As you can see we're running out of room already. I removed the dog bed, that blue thing in second model, and was able to just fit the tank along that wall. Sorry I forgot to render the model. I'll post that later.

I'm still in the planning stage and was looking for ideas.

Suggestions, comments and jokes are welcome.

Amazingly enough plain concrete isn't all that cold...okay you dont' want to run around barefoot on it in winter...but ....

My parents have it in their basement they got tired of the carpet getting flooded each time we had a really bad storm (not all that often but still...) besides it was yucky nasty carpet...go figure why they still refuse to put in a nice big pond ...I know the floor can take it.

Babel!

As far as the floor goes...I have tile in my bathroom and it has chipped in various places just from things falling on it...and none of those things weighs as much as a fish tank will, so be very careful if you choose tile. Also, tile stays very cold, and in my case, the basement is always the coldest room in the house, and I would not want tile down there. We got rid of our tile because it got so cold that everyone was forced to always wear slippers. IMO you are better off just putting down a cheap carpet that you wont get upset over if something leaks on it during a WC. Are there ways of controlling the moisture? Do dehumidifyer thingies work for that? Because damp carpet would be yucky.

Plenty of tile, or leave it stripped bare with concrete....because the weight might crack some tile....and not too expensive area rugs (mositure let alone if the python slips or leaks )

meh...add it into the coffee bar anyway, you could @least fit in 242 goldfish and 442 bala sharks....errr I mean lots of plants and a school of neons .

is there easy access to water down there for WC's?

This is a good question. There is a bathroom just outside the opened door (to the right of the white bookcase). I would have to get or make some kind of python setup though.

I havn't tried re-aranging the desks yet, I'll try that tonight in my model. It's amazing how much easier it is to arrange things in a model then in real life.

I also want to add some carpet and tile down there. Havn't thought of what colors yet. More things to try out tonight.

and then buy scuba gear so you can "be one with your fish"

Okay on a more serious note: what if you made the desk smaller, or a different shape, or both, and put it on the wall where the dog bed is/was, and then put the fish tank where the desk was? It would give you much more space I believe...and now on a random note- is there easy access to water down there for WC's?

I thought about that Babelfish. But that bar is only 65" long. The tank I'm planning on will be MUCH bigger. I'm leaning toward building an entertainment center into the wall for it.
