My dorm had a "cookout" today, it was lovely. After having not been able to eat normally for a few weeks (stressed => loss of appetite), it was amazing. They had Subway sandwiches, fresh fruit (melon, strawberries, pineapple), grilled corn (out on our back dock they had a big gas grill where they put corn on husk and all!), fountain drinks, and make-your-own s'mores! I pigged out! Fresh food is soooo nice!

I ended up eating three pieces of the sandwich (they had the really long ones), about a cup and a half of fruit, two corn cobs, two s'mores, and some root beer. Yeah I ate about enough for three people. I got there late and was pleased to find there was still food left. I'm going to suggest grilling corn that way at home. The only problem I see is it's kind of messy. Anyway it was so nice I felt like I had to say something. I'm definitely looking forward to going home for part of my summer!

For the sake of discussion, it's starting to be cookout weather here in the US/Northern Hemisphere. Anybody else have cookouts?

Superlion so glad your stress level dropped enough for you to enjoy the food. Enjoy your summer.

We are lucky, where I live it is warm enough to barbeque all year round... in winter don a jacket for cooking then bring the spoils indoors to actually eat the meal. Can cook outside but a bit chilly to eat out of doors. Still not bad going.

We made corn on the cob like that last summer. I first peeled back some of the husk and put a touch of butter on the corn, then restored the husk and put it directly on the grill, turning it occasionally. That way, it doesn't get dried out while cooking. mmmmm...... we have had a few bbq's so far this season, but no corn yet. I do see it in my future though.

Glad you had a good meal!

They always had corn on the cob on the bbq in the Brady Bunch. Always was fascinated to see what people eat on American sitcoms. Any on-screen meal/snack to be truthful.

Oooh - I love corn on the cob. No fat, just steamed in its own leaves then opened and covered with fresh black pepper. Yum!

Or maybe, if you really must, a little basil-infused olive oil drizzled inside the leaves before BBQ'ing it.

I haven't had a really great meal for ages. Stupid tummy has been kicking off about everything lately, so I'm trying to keep it bland and simple = very very boring.

i dont mean to blow my own horn but i'm a fantastic cook!

at easter time i invited about 15 of my mates around and cooked them up an italian feast!

we had foccacia, home made raviolli, home made fettuchini, 3 kinds of very tradional sauce (made from scratch, not that bottle rubbish), desert was riccotta calzone. home made antipaso dishes (sundried tomatos, olives from my grandmothers trees, grilled eggplant and peppers, home made salamis!

i'm also quite the bbq'er make some mean ribeye steaks, roasterd potatos.

heres a good bbq tip, mainade your meat in the following,

finely choped garlic
oregano,
rosemary
good olive oil,
salt
peper

let it sit in the fridge for a couple of hours

also use a combination of wood and heat beads in your bbq

steer clear of gas bbqs if you can.

I love cooking!

one thing i cant do-asian food, thats somthing i think is best left to the experts, stick to what your good at i say!

pluss it allways tastes better in the restaurant!

My mum occasionaly makes incredible Tapas or Meze. It takes ehr pretty much all day to put together 8-9 dishes, stuffed vine leaves, tabbouleh, babagenoush, houmous, fresh unleavened bread, minced lamb dishes, imam bayeldi. Lovely! for tapas, she does patatas bravas, calamari in aioli, seared chorizo, Okra, all sorts of lovely things!!

I want to learn how to make it all, I know how to make each individual dish, but I just can't get the organisation to put it all together to make proper meze.

Hey Tiny clanger, is there any chance of you giving me a recipe for real Spanish paella? I understand that it is a closely guarded secret of many Spaniards, the recipe varies just slightly from family to family, each claiming theirs it the "best". i have tried to research it on the net but many recipes appear to have been written by either Americans or English persons, the recipes seems no more Spanish than my left toe!

if secrecy is a concern i am happy for you to private message me, in exchange i am happy to offer recipes of traditional Italian foods that my parents and grandparents gave to me.

thanks in advance

"mmmmmmmm" good work African Man.

tiny clanger - your dishes sound awesome! I would have no complaints about them being served as the "star" dish of the gathering instead of a mezze offering. Any port in a storm! But it is a gift to get it all to hit the table at once.

I live it when we talk about food.
