The body was a bit under 2cm long, and it had sucking (as opposed to biting) mouthparts. I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

tigermom Hobbyist Posts: 93 Kudos: 48 Votes: 59 Registered: 27-Mar-2007 | I have no idea what kind of fly this is but I have always wondered. My friend had one land on her thigh and it started biting her or something. She swatted it off and it kept coming back, and each time it landed on her she started screaming that it was biting her. It was kinda funny actually. After she got tired of it biting her she got up and ran into the house and it actually followed her. If you find out what it is, please post. Tigermom |

Natalie Ultimate Fish Guru Apolay Wayyioy Posts: 4499 Kudos: 3730 Votes: 348 Registered: 01-Feb-2003 | If the fly your friend was around was trying to bite her, it was most likely a horsefly. They are large and notorious attackers of exposed thighs (especially if the person is wet). The fly in the picture I took was incapable of biting. I'm not sure what species it was, but I think it may have been Hystricia laxa (although I can't even find any information on the range of that species). Natalie Ultimate Fish Guru Apolay Wayyioy Posts: 4499 Kudos: 3730 Votes: 348 Registered: 01-Feb-2003 | It does resemble Paradejeania a lot as well. Now I'm confused... What the hell is the difference between all of these bee-like Tachinid genera anyway? It doesn't help that I can barely find any range information on this particular group of flies. Regarding mouthparts, I don't know what the proper term is. Most flies look like they suck to me. I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

Natalie Ultimate Fish Guru Apolay Wayyioy Posts: 4499 Kudos: 3730 Votes: 348 Registered: 01-Feb-2003 | There are huge differences between huntsman and wolf spiders. For one, the latter aren't scary. I don't even know if huntsman spiders live in the UK. I don't think we have any native ones in the continental US, there are some big ones introduced from Southeast Asia that are spreading. Proto and paradejeania are the only ones in the "group" which regularly appear in the mid-north CA area, and I have seen quite a few of the latter in SD. |
