Male cardinal:

Female cardinal with still-unidentified bird on right (link to thread)

House finch pair:

Tufted titmouse (I think ):

Downy woodpecker:

Another still not identified...a non-technical quick description would be to say it looks like a chubby sparrow with a long beak

The unidentified bird looks like a dark-eyed junco to me. Also, the last picture seems to be of some species of thrush.

I agree with the Dark-Eyed Junco (slate-colored form) on the first one, though the characteristic light-colored beak is hard to make out in the photo.

The second unidentified bird looks like a Carolina Wren to me, with the long white eyebrows, yellowish belly, and short tail. As far as I know they are a year-round resident in much of the Eastern US.

Also, your Downy Woodpecker is actually a Red-Bellied Woodpecker.

Me too, all from my backyard. I had to go searching through all my pics for some of these, so a few are pretty old.

Magpie

Ibis

All of a sudden this year all the common sparrows and quite a few of the crows are gone. Leaving us with the song birds and others that could never outcompete the sparrows before. We've had all sorts of birds in the past including purple finches chased away by the sparrows and crows. Those 2 birds were all you could see aside from the odd robin. This year over a dozen more species than usual are happily hanging around with no harassment from sparrows or crows. Including 100s of those little juncos. I'm thinking it has something to do with the fact the prairie falcons have increased their population by at least 10x in the past couple years. There was 1 falcon at my mom's house when we moved 8 years ago and now at last count there was 7. You also would see maybe 1 or 2 in an hour long drive and I counted 15 sitting on fence posts or telephone poles just between here and the next town(~20mins). The favorite food of a prairie falcon: smaller birds like sparrows.

Adam has parrots in his back yard.

I am SO jealous.

Rosellas are gorgeous. But VERY noisy. And I think the Galahs would be a bit much for a "dawn chorus" too ...

No galahs heard at dawn, just half a dozen kookaburras and thousands of lorikeets.

Wasn't my backyard, but it was someones backyard right near some of adams family we just got back from visiting.

We saw two different wild mobs that day, first had a bakers dozen the other 15 or so Emu's
I took my shots from the car, adam decided he wanted to scamper off through the farmers fields to become one with the emu's

Here's an interesting confrontation caught at the feeder in our backyard. Love the horrified look on the Lori in the corner of the shot .

What kind of feeders do you use for the parrots? We have fruit/nectar feeders for Orioles around here, so I'm wondering if you have something similar.

Superlion , Yes , he didn't even seem all that phased by it.
Sat on the fence with all his mates and squawked at the Correllas until they left .
The Rainbow Lorrikeet is a seriously tough bird .

Natalie , We feed the many different types of Parrots we get a mix of seed called Wild Bird mix .
They all seem to pick different types of seed that they like out of it .

The feeder is a home made one , because we get many fogs here in the mountains I needed something that would drain so that the food would not spoil .
So I built a frame and covered it with shade cloth . Simple really .
