Soooo, I have to go to a wedding.

I've never been to a wedding. There is no dress code, no colour preference, no theme, no nothing I'm at a loss.

I went dress shopping. Well, no. I went to a farriers appointment and dropped in to the dress shop.

For anyone wondering, this is a bad plan. I was wearing a singlet, polo top, reg grundies, jeans, black socks and boots. The sales girl comes up with all these options and lets just say that none of them looked any good with the singlet and black socks *sigh* dumb dumb.

First dress dripped off me. I looked like a salmon coloured drowned rat.

Second dress was designed for someone with the strangest upper-body I could imagine. I can't think of anyone I have ever seen that could make that dress look good. Do they model these things on real people or is there a surrealist dressmaker somewhere?

Third was stunning. Beaded sequined top, and cute skirt. But wait! what is that??? What are those, those things?? Ewwww! this dress stopped just above my knees, drawing attention to their knobbilyness and accentuating the unevenness. Nope, next please.

Fourth was gorgeous. Tricky sales girl had stuck her head in and handed me this gen saying "I know its $90, but I think it would look gorgeous on you, i think it'll be the one". *mutter mutter* I wish. It was a halter neck over a boob tube type thing with a square cut below the knee skirt, in flattering chocolate brown I loved it. But we cannot let the sales girls win.

Last was a black dealie. Floor-length, silk with a satin petticoat doobie and rows of bronze beads all over it. Best of all, it fit like a glove, and was within the price range Fantastic!

And here is the doozie. Now I need accessories. I am a girly dunce. I don't understand make-up, and I don't get hairdressers and I can't walk in heels. HELP!

Do i go black shoes? Bronze? should the handbag match? what sort of jewellery? Black or bronze? Hair up? if so, how? Should i get foils?
What type of make up?

It is an afternoon wedding followed by *gasp* dancing I want to enjoy it, i really do, but its so... un-me!

Here is the dress. Sales Girl assured me it was suitable.

I'm standing on my toes, and the pixellation makes it look like it is hanging around my chest, but it isn't. Will try to get a better picture

i can't help you with your accessories, but that dress *definitely* looks nice on you but i've always been told that you have to match your colors somehow

I'll jump in here...I would probably pick colored accessories such as red shoes and purse (bronze would be good too) You don't want to go too black, it's not a funeral after all. Just try to match your shoes to you purse...and skip the heels if you can't walk in them, otherwise, you'll just end up looking like a little girl playing dress up in her mommy's shoes. Trust, been there, done that....can't say that it was good.

Forgot to say, very nice dress...wear it with confidence, you look great in it!

I was toying with a cherry red colour but i thought I might look a tad er, black and red. Do you think it'd be ok?

I look scarily gothic in black as I have quite pale skin, so anything that helps me look less white would be fantastic. I think I will stay away from black accessories. As it is I'd like to make it a bit more cheery.
I desperately wanted to wear boots with it, but when I mentioned the words 'black kneehigh laceup' to a girly friend's mother she almost fell over, taking me aside to show me some 'nice feminine' shoes It was the perfect excuse to buy the boots, but I don't want the almost-MIL giving me the same aghast expression nice feminine shoes it is.

I'm really uncomfy in dresses, so I think I'm going to have to practice between now and then so I don't look like a nervy goose

If I ever get married, I'll specify that everyone is to wear sensible clothes.

LOL...usualy for a daytime wedding a pantsuit of some sort would be perfectly acceptable (now she tells me )

Yes, I think red would be very striking and help mix up the color a lot. Not too black and red for me. Perfect accent pieces

I would go with strappy black shoes (and no stockings/hose), kind of like these (they aren't too high either) http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/11793088/c/82.html . I would stay from a bright color shoe with that great dress because the emphasis would be pulled down from the dress to your feet. Then find a bag in the color you choose and a great necklace.

Ohh! pretty!

Its not so much the height, but the whole balancing on a pinhead thing. I need something wideish, and nice feminine strappy types tend not to come in widish heels (probably expect that the chickes will have good balance )

And *smack* to you Crazyred! no fair! although, the dress does have one big advantage. When there is dancing I can simply wiggle enthusiastically and hopefully nobody will be able to tell I have no idea what I'm doing

Well, you never know....custom could be different down there, but traditionally, here, a wedding in the afternoon would be considered less formal, so a pantsuit in any color but white would work. It's in poor taste to wear anything white or frilly to a wedding here as it might upstage the bride (even if she's not wearing white )

It's your choice on the shoes...I'm just thinking a small splash of color could help break up the black a little. Perhaps a dark red?

Dancing is def. not my thing either. I'm more like the desginated drinker. /:'

You would be suprised! The most comfortable heels I have ever worn were 3" stilettos! A little bit of practice and you'll be fine. Whatever you do, don't go with flat, flat shoes

I'm currently learning to walk in 6" heels (not that I ever plan on leaving the house in them )

me too!
I agree on a pantsuit being a better choice for an afternoon wedding (unless its late afternoon) at least here in the States.

As for makeup, doesn't look like you need much. Some lipstick and if you're as pale as you say some blush. Eyeshadow (greyish shades) if you want.

For shoes you'll want some amount of heel, but yes it's definitely easier to balance on a wider heel. That shouldn't be *too* hard to find. Agreed that strappy black would be good, but whoever said to try dark red has a good idea too. If you do that, plan to use the same dark red elsewhere (could even be a ribbon in your hair) to tie it together.

For jewelry it's up to you. I'd go for bronzeish if you have it so it's not too dark. You could make something beady

Is your hair still long? (can't tell with this picture)

Still long. By hairdressers definitions it probably falls into the very long category

Nice one Calla. Dress is great.

Shoes? I would personally go with black strappy numbers. Ask to see something in a "kitten heel". Style has a bit of lift but is not tottery. If you say to a sales girl "show me a heel but not too high" she will show you something SHE thinks is not too high. Your defition may be very different.

Practice wearing the dress and the shoes at home. You look great so you deserve to feel great too!

You are going to the Netherlands and you mention the almost-MIL. Is one of Jerry's siblings tying the knot? Very exciting but did they have to do it after you and J acquired a mortgage?

btw when J's rellies rudely put you on the spot and ask when your wedding is [there will be at least ONE aunty, believe me] you can say "we had to choose whether to host our own wedding or fly here as guests - this won"

I would not go for contrasting colour shoes. A block of colour will be too contrast and draw they eye away from the lovely shape of the dress. Exception to this would be if it was an emerald dress and you match the shoes in a tone if not exact colour. Also, would be okay if the dress was patterned. But a contrast colour shoes would be too much like "hey, here comes a pair of red shoes aaaaaaand a person in a dress too."

Interesting to know. Very, very rare to see any ladies wearing pants to a wedding irrespective of time of day at an Australian wedding. I would imagine for a wedding in the Netherlands it would be even more dressy.

If you are being escorted by one of the immediate family of the bride or groom it is not possible to overdress sweets. Unless you go all silly & choose something ridiculous - which you wont do. I think the dress is perfect. If people are super dressed up you wont feel like a hick. And if it is a bit casual you will feel swish but not too showy. Good job /:'

I wore black pantsuit with dark blue shirt to my sisters wedding.....then agian there were a lot of persians there and they love black .....I chose pants becuase they said I could take pics () for those that have seen me shoot I have a habit of getting myself into some pretty odd spots to get just the right angle on something ....

The way I see shopping...yeah the silver shoes might be cool (what can I say, dorthey made more of an impression on me than that stupid barbie girl did!) but exactly how many times will you wear them...honestly....and who exactly are you going to impress with the outfit (in my case almost no one ever ). If I can rationalize spending X ammount on a pair of shoes ect that I'm not likely to ever wear again then I'll do it, otherwise I'd say go for a nice set of black shoes that are likely to get wear on another occasion.

heels Almost cant stand the things myself, but I found a pair I can actually walk in ..not only that I almost have more balance in them that I do in flats ...big square heels and an ankle strap, basic black can go either dress or semi casual. Get a pair and just keep walking in them (dont forget about stairs).
Hair and makeup, find some magazines and look look look. Seventeen ect would be good if you can find them...especially now around prom time (here in the states anyway ...just look close at hair and makeup and fiddle around some...okay lots.
Find (make ) a really nice necklace and complimenting hair dangley thingies...that's what I didnt have for my sisters wedding, although I did have a bracelet she'd given me

I cant say I know how to do it either but yeah
I did worry about what to wear to my sisters....these things should come with a life guide , in the end I had worse things to worry about (like dieing).
