Yes Tammy very well said!

I just want to make it clear this is not the reason I am not going to get the tank.

I made a clear headed adult decision about it. I really just have no where to put such a tank ATM. If I lived in a house It would be different. But yeah. It almost made me sick when I came to this realization.

I again state: I will help Judy break it down and I will help her sell it. If I have to make another trip down to vero to do so then so be it.

I still am willing to collect funds to present to Judy. As I am sure all of this has been very costly. I will make sure she gets everything you send to me.

About the paypal..I've now found out that credit card based accounts require me to upgrade to a bis account, and it still charges something like 1.9-2.9 + 30 cents for me to be able to accept your generosity. I will be upgrading the account tonight or tomorrow so the transactions will be complete.

No worries about the paypal thing. I needed to do it anyhow.

To those that emailed me..Sorry for the lack of response today.

The job I am currently working doesn't allow for much, if any on-line time at work.

Regards

Shannen

Jamie - that is the reason I want to send money and start a collection. It would be nice if we could come up with the 700+ needed to take care of business. Alot of people, giving a little, can really add up.

I'm sorry Jamie....If we do not get enough 700 is what I am willing to give to this cause! End of story!

Gary really meant a lot to me and it really hurts me that he has passed, even more so that this is the 2nd person that I've know and respected in a year to pass because of a stroke.

I did not spend any $$ when Steven died, nor did I go to his funeral! I didn't even ask to go. (it was in North Carolina)

He DID teach me every thing I know about telephone systems.....in a way he was like Gary...my mentor.

We have the money...I will use it for this..So what if it means we have to wait another month for our wedding!

I am tired of people that I love dying on me. I know we need to pay for a wedding, but this is so important to me, it isn't even funny. Hell I'm crying as I type this. Sorry that you all have to see this emotion!

It makes it oh so much more real to see it in type.

I would like to help if I could as well....post a seperate thread for it. I only had a few run-ins with Gary, but I loved his dry humor.

Jamie, don't fret, you will get the wedding On time too (BOYS! any excuse to get out of it for a few days longer pfft!)

We will all help out on this one.

If you need a co-ordinator on the ground over here, that can be done.

heck, $10 in an envelope will help. I'll run this past the others, see if we can get something slightly more organised going

Shannen....

What do you suppose Gary would say to you right now?

He would probably smile... say something witty... and tell you to keep Jamie happy or else... He would probably make some kind of comment about if he was younger and single he'd give you a run for your money where she is concerned. Then he would have probably made a joke in reference to his wife. He joked quite often about her but it was clear that with him being the type of man he was that they had a strong relationship.

He'd probably tell you that (if he could) he would dance with your bride at the wedding. Of course when it came to wedding gifts he'd probably ask where his was.

I learned something about Gary in his final days. Even though he and I sparred quite abit here, it was all pretty trivial. What mattered most wasn't debating about using aquarium salt, how to cure Ich, or who knows more about what in regards to fishkeeping. Gary's most profound statement came when he gave a bit of advise to Tim a couple of weeks ago. What he said came from a father to a son and was a true gift. That day I learned that there were two sides to Gary. I had been conditioned to only see one side. He taught me a lesson that day.

I guess what I am trying to say is Gary would be eternally grateful to you for what you intend to do to help his wife but he wouldn't want you to do it if it meant putting your own family second in any way.

The biggest tribute you could give to Gary is to go forward with your plans to wed Jamie as planned. Everything else will work out.

Smile when you think of Gary. Being sad would not be what he would want.

Shannen and Jamie let me know, and I can send a little, probably not a whole lot, but a little now, and maybe a little on the 15th...

<--would love a threesome of gary's guppies, I'll go get another tank just for them...

and Diane you don't want to know how many guppies would fit in a 125...I know I had too many in a 29, and then there are all of those fry:%)(thanks for the laugh I needed it)--Heidi

Sounds good Shannen.

I still want to chip in towards gas. I take it you won't need a trailer?

Just for my own curiosity, how will you deal with the guppies. Has Judy given you any estimates on how many may be in that 125?

Do you have battery operated air pumps? If not, a few Penn-Plax B-11's would go a long way if dropped into a cooler with the fish. I've had one run almost 4 days on 2D batteries.

I was also wondering about temp. How do you keep the temp from dropping for such a trip? A drop in temp from say 78F down to 70F in six hours or so, for example, could bring on ich.

Hope you don't mind the questions. I know you breed bettas so you must have these kinds of things thought out. I'm just wondering how its done.

Ditto with shipping this time of year. I received my Master Test Kit and various other chemicals frozen like a brick. It got stuck on a FedEx truck over a weekend, unexpectedly when the blizzard hit. How much do heating pads keep them warm? I don't have any room for them, but I know others are inquiring. I've often wondered how those folks in Thailand handle shipping to the US this time of year

No worries Dian.

Because of my Betta program I am ready and able to handle them.

I have 4 30 gal tubs that I will house them in. I have spare heaters and such also.

I also have 4 cycled filters from my Goldie pond that I would use. They are extra sponge filters that I had for going in the Betta tank when they fry need it.

The journey for the fish will not be very stressful on them. They will be bagged and put in coolers with heat packs.

Air stones are not needed. I just open the bags when I stop for gas. This is how I got all my fish to Fl when I moved from DC. I did not loose one fish, and that was a 12hr trip.

Heat packs do work very well. They last for 20 some odd hours. You pack them on top of the bags so they are not touching the water. They get pretty hot. I'm not sure of the exact temp, but it is enough to keep Trops alive.

Wow - interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing.

20 hours on the heat packs doesn't seem like much. In this cold weather, blizzards and all, anything can happen to delay an overnight shipment. For some reason, I thought they worked longer.

Hi, the heat packs come in different time allotments I think. I recently ordered apple snails from a breeder in Texas and she used 60 hour heat packs. I have heard mention of 40 hr. ones as well. Many just use heat packs that are found in sporting goods stores or Wal-Mart in the sporting goods section. They do use sterofoam all around to retain the heat however.

Indeed they do. I'll pick more up. My boxes are styro insulated coolers.

I get them from pharmacies for free..

Just don't be put off by the "human blood" stickers on them.

Well on a couple of them lol..

Dian, If your really worried about shipping this time of the yr, I will be happy to hold them for you and other members until it gets warmer.

I'm only breeding 1 gold pair of HMs ATM and do not need these tubs or anything.

It will be a wile before I can do more with the bettas.. I have to wait until I'm done with all this travel I'm doing..]:| *kicks job*

Aww that's nice, but I don't have any room for more fish, ATM. I would have loved a male or two, but I won't be breeding either so it would be good for someone to keep the line going.

I would also like to donate, and if the guppies can be shipped to Oz then i would like a few also. If a thread could be created about donating money this would be helpfull. I don't quite understand how i go about donating money through paypal. Good luck with the trip!

Hi All

I don't know if this will make sense and I don't think enough of the right traffic will make it into that long thread on Gary Roland.

As Frank updated us in that thread, Gary has passed away. His wife, Judy, has taken us up on our offer to find a member(s) to help her in any way we can with the fish. She has requested help with dismantling the 125g guppy tank. Shannen has offered to go. She is looking to sell the setup.

I've seen how long stuff can lurk in papers and e-boards for aquarium stuff. I kind of thought that if a bunch of us send checks or can send money via paypal or similar to Shannen, that money can be presented to Judy. She is looking for a fair price and I don't know what would be considered fair.

If 50 people donate 10 bucks, that's 500 dollars. I don't know if that is enough. If someone can donate 15 or 25, all the better.

Here's the catch. I think shannen should be the recipient for taking the time to make that drive and to do the work. It's just a way to make it move faster than it would otherwise.

I'd like to know if Shannen has PayPal to accept donations??? Or, if someone knows a better way. Maybe sending checks directly to Judy? Not sure.

Thoughts?

I like Tammy's idea, send Shannen to help her disassemble the tanks but put them up for auction. Shannen, 700 is a lot of money for us to spend right now...especially since we are trying to save up for our wedding. I am not trying to be selfish...just realistic. I too want the best for Judy as well and she could probably get more money through auction. ?????
