Yeah, really he's going to be hiding under his bed those days. I bet he looks like a mouse.

My departure date keeps getting set back... need brakes fixed, need new wheel rim, need a rear-view mirror (personally I can't see why any of those things are necessary). So it looks like Day 1 will be tomorrow (Thursday 29).

Also I need to come back to Calgary a little earlier than expected. I need to be here for a Party on Thursday August 26.

OOOOO and sneak a Pic of DRO, just to see if he's really as scary looking as he claims .

hey I've turned out to be "mostly harmless" ...except when driving new cars .

I hope you'll be able to pick your torch up on the way home home then if you don't get it before...or that your brother will be able to forward it ....those batteries will work great for sticking in peoples ears .

Yea...but at least Adam has their IP addresses.....

Definitely Whetu needs to meet DRO (full story please!), and maybe he can keep her from sleeping at a few truck stops. I'll feel better then!

Also my brother said to tell you that he can think of one thing more dangerous than sleeping in a truck stop. Visiting strange people you only know from the internet!

By the way babel I didn't get my *flashlight* yet, but it's ok because that's another thing I'll borrow from my bro. I asked him for a fridge but he said no.

Also my brother said to tell you that he can think of one thing more dangerous than sleeping in a truck stop. Visiting strange people you only know from the internet! That boy has no sense of adventure!

In the next few days I'll be starting on my Great Trek from Calgary to Lubbock. If anyone has driven all or part of this route, or if you're just better at reading maps than me I'd appreciate you taking a look at my plan and telling me if it has any major faults...

If, however, you consider going to Lubbock is a fault in itself, there is no need to tell me because I've heard it all before! I'm on a trek to see the 'real USA' rather than just the big cities and tourist traps. I've heard a rumour that there are some real Americans in Lubbock, so I'm on my way to find out.

Also can anyone give me the low-down on places to stay along the way? Cheap camp-grounds would be best. Know any truck-stops with clean bathrooms, showers etc? How about cheapie restaurants for breakfast?

Day 1: Start near Strathmore, drive to the Canada/US border crossing at Sweetgrass. Smile sweetly at the immigration officers and get let through without trouble. Drive through Great Falls to Billings, Montana. Spend the night in or near Billings.

Day 2: From Billings follow Highway 90 to Buffalo, Wyoming. Switch to Highway 25 through Casper to Cheyenne. (Remember my eight glasses a day when I pass through Chugwater, Wyoming.) Anyone know a cheap camp-ground near Cheyenne?

Day 3: Leave Cheyenne, continue on Highway 25 through Denver, Colorado. Down through Colorado Springs to Raton, New Mexico.

Day 4: Switch to Route 64 , then meet up with Highway 40 at Vega, Texas. Take 40 to Amarillo, then onto 27 to Lubbock. Meet up with Iltat and give him a hiding because I'm so grumpy after my long drive.

Days 5 to 30: Sleep for a week. Forget to go out and see if there are any real Americans in Lubbock. Turn around and go home the same way.

Thanks for the concern babel and sunflower, but I'm one tuff kiwi chick! Also I'm reasonably sensible, so if an area is poorly lit or has a bad 'feel' to it I'll just drive away.

My brother has offered me his Chevy Suburban (SUV) which has tinted windows all around the rear section. I'll hang a sheet between the rear and front areas so nobody will be able to see me when I'm sleeping in the back. It has central locking that also locks the rear doors, and I can access the cab without going out of the vehicle. And of course babelfish lent me her trusty cell phone.

I'm also borrowing a gas stove, a cooler, some pots & pans and a futon mattress from my bro. Everything a gal needs for a great road trip! wheee!

The latest plan is that I'll leave here (Calgary) this Wednesday 28, so that will be Day 1. I fly out of Calgary back to NZ on September 5. I thought I'd take a really fast journey down to Texas then meander my way back more slowly, and take in the sights along the way.

I think a visit to Dallas would be very much in order, meriadoc! Also some people I met when I was staying with moondog invited me to visit them in Austin so there's another piece of the plan.

moondog it was great fun staying with you in your zoo! I wish I could have stayed longer too, but you know how it is... itchy feet & all... gotta keep on truckin'.

Speaking of truckin, thanks for the truck-stop suggestions. I think I'm going to be sleeping in my vehicle most nights. When driving to Tim's with babelfish we saw all the big rigs lined up along the side of the highway. I think I'll just pull in behind them in my mini-rig and act like one of the gang. Maybe they won't even notice that I talk funny and my truck only comes up to their hubcaps!

No! Don't visit Billy! He likes being difficult. Only my mom can save me from the wrath of his questions on the phone.

Really though, he's a great guy. Just don't pay attention to anyone else in his town. HE is what a "real" American should be!

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.
