Why would reasonable people allow such stupidity??

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,191436,00.html

I mean, I know that the elephant is revered in the Buddhist religion...seems in that case, you would want to ensure that nothing like that ever happened. Right?...maybe it's just me.

Yeah, it would be much more respectful and reverent to him just to bring a pile of leaves. This story made me sad.

Me too, but if its traditional then its traditional, i guess. Perhaps when it became a tradition thier logic was Cookie=Yummy Elephant = Good I like yummy things thus Elephants like yummy things, thus feed elephant a cookie.

Some people do it with their household pets as well, sharing human food with their pets for a treat.

The poor elephant just sounded so miserable in the story. He had tears coming out of his eyes. Who knew elephants cried? Not me. Poor thing, I hope he's going to be all right.

Elephants cry a lot whether they are in pain or not, they have very active tear ducts for getting rid of dust and protecting the eye. I wouldnt wish a twisted or inflated gut on my worst enemy though. Poor fella.

I did not know that! Yeah, I haven't heard anything...I hope he got over his tummy ache, and I hope they refrain from feeding him cookies from now on.

The problem wasn't that they gave him cookies.

They just didn't give him milk.

Unfortunately I expect that elephant will be dead now, if not treated almost immediately with chemical purging and surgery, an inflamed or twisted gut often adheres to its own tissue, scars and ruptures or becomes completely blocked. For an elephant that kind of treatment would probably come in at around $35,000, so im betting no-one could afford it. All because of extra sugar and animal fat.

I hope he makes it though.
