That's pretty sad.

American Idol is even worse... None of the overweight people (well, none of the girls and very few of the guys) make it past the first couple of rounds. I was watching some episode where they were recruiting people in Arkansas or some state like that, and there was a girl who had the most amazing voice I've ever heard. But they flat out said to her that she couldn't go to Hollywood because she was too "ugly".

The version in the States is nothing but a beauty contest, and oftentimes the only ones who get picked are the skinny supermodel ones, even if they have horrible voices.

I sat one row in front of her on a plane back from Townsville a few weeks ago. I can't stand her singing, and it may be because she has dreadlocks, but she smells funky.

Yeah, Adam I bet it is the dredlocks. I haven't heard her sing, but you know the size and shape of a person shouldn't be a determining factor or anything...just goes to show, noone likes the more voluptuous girls...

who cares what they look like, it is the singing that matters

At the risk of being very unpopular, there is a point, and I hate to say it, but there is a point where being overweight is unhealthy.

Promoting it as a good thing is not very wise.

She is a fantastic singer, and she should be proud of that.

She should try to get her weight a little more inside the healthy parameters, because although she is a fantastic role model for success and singing, I don't feel comfortable promoting the image of an overweight girl for all young girls to aspire to.

Its very similar to promoting a chain smoker, no matter how nice of a person and how good of a singer, its just not right.

HOWEVER if you bugger the role model arguement, and promote her solely on her singing, I have no issue with it, as she is pretty spiffy.

Anyways, I agree with what you're all saying. She shouldn't be shunned because she has a weight problem, but it shouldn't be condoned either. It won't change because of lawsuits or anything, it is all of society as we know it. We as a whole are really materialistic and shallow. It makes sense that something like that would happen. Not that it is good, but, well, I'm sure everyone knows that society pushes us to be skinny, beautiful, and perfect.

kinda like americas next top model, only 1 +size model made it into the finals & like only 1 out of 6 juges liked her.

What's kind of interesting is that Sony's being blamed for all of this situation. It seems to me that Sony is in the business of making money. They constantly study how groups will react to certain artists' releases and design artists into molds that receive the best reaction from their particular audiences. If she was going to be received so well from the public, they wouldn't smash her career because she doesn't fit their profile, they would be more interested in making the money of exploiting her. If they're not promoting her as well as some get promoted, there's a public opinion behind it. We can all talk about how wonderful it would be to not take her size into account, but in the long run, we all still notice it...

I was over at Sydney when they were having the Idol finals few segments. My fiance and I watched it every time. Did not manage to see the final contest but we both felt that Casey was good. At least better than the Idols we have back here.

Speaking of Americas idols howz that Ruben guy doing? Has he became faoumous or is he the same as casey souds good doesnt look good.
