My cats beg for algae wafers

When we got our new rescue kitty Freaya last year she cost me £10 in assorted Hikari foods before we cat proofed them. The a few months after that we found the AWOL algae wafers hidden behind the TV unit when she went in for a snack.

One of our cats had gotten hold of the fish flake bag before, and I was relieved to grab it from her - fairly intact - after chasing her up the stairs after it.. then just the other week pre-dinnertime, I was annoyed to find that the damaged bag had been stolen off the top of one of the tanks and the two cats had been quietly, sneakily, polishing it off between them under the table ]:| Not best pleased, it was decent mail order stuff and theres less than 1/3 left now! :#( Lil' tinkers

So thats back being religiously shut in a drawer between fish grub times.

Yes! I thought my cat was just a freak. She acts like an addict around fish food. If I open some in front of her she gets a crazy look in her eye and does everything in her power to get some off me - including batting my hand with her paw to make me let it go and biting my fingers to get the food off them. If I walk around with the food in my hand she follows me and sometimes grabs my ankles. She likes the betta pellets more than anything. Usually I'll drop a couple on the floor for her just so she leaves me alone, and she gobbles them up and then spends the next 10 minutes sniffing around the floor looking for more.

I keep my betta tanks down low, underneath the TV. She can reach them but they have lids on, so she can't get to the fish. But when I feed them she sticks her nose right up against the little feeding hole and tries to snatch the food away from my hand.

I wonder what's in them that makes cats do this? She doesn't even react to her own food this way.

The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. - Oscar Wilde

Well I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one... or maybe I should say she's not the only one.

She literally went nuts for the stuff... like it was high potency catnip. Oh and there was no polite asking. It was NOW ! That was what was so strange. Going from complete ignorance to I have to have it NOW. :%)

I've been keeping fish for almost one and one-half years. My 9-year old cat has never much bothered with the fish. Once in a blue moon she'll stand in front of the 10 gallon and watch but usually nothing.

Last night when I was feeding the fish, she started meowing, clawing and then climbing up my leg. After fighting with her for a couple of minutes I finally figured out what she was after.... the fish food !! She actually climbed up, stuck her head inside the can and started munching away.

Now I guess I can understand the attraction... fish food is made from fish but her sudden intense attraction/reaction was what surprised me. The reaction was stronger than if she was after catnip.

Has anyone experienced or heard of this before ? Also, will fish food hurt her ?

Is so glad that she isn't the only one with a dog that gets into all sorts of stuff he knows he isn't supposed toand let me say a box of individually packaged hot chocolates are a pain to get off the floor once Stanley get ahold of them]:|

Now I'm gonna have to go home though and see if either Stanley or Cleo are interested in fish food I'll report back tomorrow with the results.

I do know that Leslie's old pug, Sunny loved bird food

Neither my cats or my ferret have ever shown any interest in flake food...

But now I'm interested!

*wonders if she should experiment or not...*

Okay, I'm low on flakes so I guess I'll save it for the shishies...this time...

My ferret stole a whole container of fish food and stashed it in his hide. None left when I found it.

I wouldn't think there is anything in flake food that would hurt a cat, although mine never seemed to want to eat flakes either. As Moondog said one of mine used to ask politely for flake food, but then once I dropped some on the floor she'd smell it and either roll in it or lose interest all together. The other one never seemed to notice one way or the other..

My dog adores flake food however, and has been known to knock the container off the top of the tank to get into it whenever he thinks he can get away with it... He also likes to munch aquatic plants, and steals the trimmings out of the bucket before I can get them into the green cart!!

Probably not that much worse than dry catfood. The cats I was raised with only ever ate dry and never had any problems (well except for the kids down the street that thought it funny to feed half of them anti-freeze ].
