At work today I was offered a conure in a trade. I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with them. This one is about one year old and supposedly very nice. I've always wanted a larger bird and this would be a great opportunity. The conures at work have always been cool, even if they can be a bit on the loud side!

So if anyone has had them and has opinions, let me know!

Oh yeah, in case you're wondering what the trade is, he offered me the conure for my leaky 150 gallon tank. He wants to convert it into a large leopard gecko habitat.

What kind of conure?

I have a green-cheek conure at home. As all birds, they require a LOT of attention or they will get depressed, anxious, agressive, etc. Conures have a call that will split your eardrums if you are anywhere near them too. It takes a good long time to get used to it. The larger conures are worse for it though. So to make sure you know what you're getting into... all conures are very demanding: ie if you have food in the room they will yell at you until you give them some, if they know you're in another room, or are talking to someone else, they will scream.

Conures can be very nice birds if they're well-trained (though I am assuming this one is probably not so well-trained if the owner wants to part with it, so you may have to start at the beginning). They are very intelligent, and comical, not to mention very beautiful.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure which specific kind of conure it is though, I'm going to find that out tomorrow hopefully.

I really don't have room for the 150 to just sit around, and it's not resealable, I already tried once...it did not end well.

I realize they are very demanding. From what I know of the guy, he's really good with his pets. He is parting with his conure because he is getting into leopard gecko breeding and is trying to cut down on expenses.

Having owned conures in the past (and MANY other birds) I would say GO FOR IT! The tank is worthless to you, the bird would not be. Even if you decided not to keep the bird in the long run, selling it would bring in more than the tank would. If it really is sweet though (and be warned it could take it some time to be sweet with you), it is a trade that you will enjoy, I am sure. Conures are comical little guys! I would not even hesitate for a moment!

I believe the conure is either a sun or jenday. He said it was like the ones that we had at the store, and those are the two we have at the store. If he can't remember for sure, I should be able to figure it out when I see it.

Suns and Jendays look very different from one another. Suns are worth more though, and I think they are far prettier. Conures in general are noisey birds. I would still do it if it was me. The ONLY reason I do not have birds in my house right now is because I am allergic to them now. I used to have more birds and bird cages than I did aquariums!

So I finally found out the exact type of conure. It is a Jenday conure, and suppose to be a well trained one. I haven't gotten to meet it yet, but hopefully some point this week.
