Callatya got me started thinking about this one....

Post fav recipes then we can all attempt (please refer to my anzac thread ) to make them .

Here's the cornbread, the way I grew up with it...please note lack of actual corn kernals in it .

1 cup yellow corn meal
1 cup sifted flour
1/4 cup sugar (my parents never made it with sugar...tastes fine without )
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup soft shortening
1 cup milk
1 egg beaten
Preheat oven to 425F

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. Cut in shortening. Mix eggs and milk together and add to dry ingredients with a few swift strokes. Bake in greased 9"X9"X2" pan for 20 to 25 minutes.

just be sure to eat the crusts first

Babel's variation:
Use 3/4 cup whole wheat flour and 1/4 cup white flour instead of a full cup of white flour...this will make a heartier bread that's great with soups .

I'll post "american" biscuits soon...just to erase any and all confusion that usually occurs when biscuits are mentioned.

Ummm I don't think that means Babel has too much free time...do you have something against baking fish1???

Anyway, I'd like to try that recipe for Thanksgiving. As long as all your recipes don't end up like those poor anzacs...

Can we edit the title to include pies too.

Errr... the idea was to share the recipes that are somewhat of a mystery to people of the anzac region (ya know saying nz and oz is just as fast ...) like the fact that our biscuits are different then theirs and that they're aparently not all that familar with cornbread.....

Yes you do want to be familiar with cornbread! Babel's cornbread is delicious! Make it like babel does without the sugar, then spread vegemite on it for the ultimate cross-cultural ANZUS experience

BTW, pies are a bit of a mystery I think... it seems that in the US a pie is almost invariably a sweet thing filled with fruit? Here it tends to be meat-filled and eaten with tomato sauce or gravy...

ok now I've opened up the usual can of worms. tomato sauce = ketchup. Gravy = well... something different for anzacs than it is for Americans :%)

Hmmm yeah pies in the US are generally done with fruit...although not always sweet...and my mom makes the best-est ever pie crust . However, dinner pies are also eaten...chicken pot pie used to be ( still is ) one of my favorites....and this is coming from a veggie .

Whetu put vegemite on hers, I grew up having cornbread as part of weekend breakfasts...my dad (step dad acutally) would often make it saturday mornings...and we'd have it with jam, honey, molasses, syrup ect.....but we'd also have it with chili (step dad again ) on sunday nights watching star trek (next gen of course ).

Great thread Babel.

Recipe for american biscuits please!

I looooove pumpkin pie. Had it as a kid at friend's place who had friends of the family that were from the states. It made a BIG impression on me obviously.
