mango - 3.4 carat is nothing around this neck of the woods where i live - my little diamond is a simple dust speck compared to some of the rings i see - some are at least 5 carats - and they're freakin huge.

aargh... not quite on topic, but the subject title drives me wild. Each time I see it I instantly have that horrible song of JLo in my head and it takes forever to get rid of it...

on topic, me and my wife were sensible, we bought plain gold engagement rings and save the money for the wedding party itself. as wedding ring I gave her one with 7 (small/tiny)diamonds, she's currently wearing both

Mine is a black hills gold set. It is small, but unique. The diamonds weren't the only thing there, so a smaller stone was made to look much larger. When we had been married for 10 years he bought me a 1/2 carat solitaire. It is really pretty and I really like it, but it will never be as special as the little chips he bought me when he didn't have to

This topic turned stale! I was just more curious what some people have out there! I dont care about the size! Just interested in what people have for fun! I dont want you to wabble in your emotional distress of no jewelery, orhow big a ring should be!! Keep this fun people!

I USED to have a 1 carat marquise solitare in white gold. He will soon be returning it per the courts instructions. After that, I may sell it and take a nice vacation or I may have it made into a necklace. Who knows. I don't really care anymore. The size of the diamond is really not that big of a deal, and it's not like having a big ring is going to make a person happy.

In 19 and 1/2 years of marriage my ex never bought me any kind of diamonds. Hmmm...maybe one of the reasons why he is now an ex. I have been seriously thinking about buying myself a serious right-hand ring.

Stats in a wedding magazine said that the average in Australia is 3/4 of a carat. There used to be an adage about the amt a gentleman would spend, a pro rata guide if you like. I think it was 3 mths salary... someone else may be able to verify or set this right.

Moondog, funny you say that about marking ones territory and rings being un-necessary. I was just talking with some people at work and one girl was saying her finance who is involved in community theatre built a rapport with a fellow actor. The young girl got a crush big time and was devestated to realise the man was engaged.

Perhaps it isn't about being possessive but rings signify you are off the market. I must admit I have been in a situation where I thought the gentleman was available and interested and found out...bzzzzzz off the market, he's engaged. At least young men know when a young lady is betrothed. As an available young lady sometimes men are engaged and there is no way of knowing. Can lead to a misunderstanding

Just a thought...

a princess cut diamond actually looks smaller than the round equivalent as the stone is higher than the round. And is more expensive because of the cut.

all of my diamonds are princess cut - i don't particularly like the other shapes.

Well I did propose to my other half just recently. But I had planned for it close to a year ago. Yes I got the ring more than a year before the actual event. Yes, what happened if we broke up? I am such a fool for love. But I kind of decided on her when I get that ring anyway, but enough of that.

I had the whole thing done in Amsterdam when I visited the diamond industries there, don't ask me why. I guess it's just cos I got to choose the stone and got to see it even before it was set into the ring. What I ended up with was a .3(I think) carat stone set in a simple ring. Choosing diamonds also involves some other Cs. The color of the diamond changes the cost, mine was white or was it river? These are because the stone has been located around a water source and during the process of it's creation the stone is much cleaner due to the water moving around it. Clarity rates how much inclusions/particles the stone has, mine had very very small inclusions. The cut being the last, some cuts are cheaper due to the fact that the cutter needs to cut less to make the stone sparkle thus saving much of the stone. Mine was the usual circular cut. Well cut stones should sparkle regardless of whether it is held in light or in very low light. I did get another princess cut stone for a necklace for her to be given later. I will not talk about the cost since when you love someone cost means nothing so long as you can afford it. Yes the love fool talking again...

I learnt from my dad that set stones tend to be harder to view since the ring itself gets in the way. He used to work for his jeweller father before their business closed during World War 2.

Please correct me if you think my information is incorrect. I am just sharing based on what I can recall.

So I just got engaged a couple of weeks ago.. and I want to know, what size engagement rings did you girls /guys buy/get out there? My center stone is .50 carat (half) and i have some other stones on the side.. equaling 7/8ths of a carat in total weight. And mine is two-tone..settings in white..rest of band is yellow 14 kt gold. Would like to see what you all have out there!

Moondog,
I've never actually thought about engagement rings as you so eloquently put it but you do have a point about it just being a "marking your territory" issue. I kind of pride myself on not being a "typical" woman and had never thought about the engagement ring that way before. I'm sure my boyfriend will be excited when I tell him how I was enlightened on Fish Profiles!

Mine's a princess cut .46 carat E grade diamond set in white gold. Whenever i've gone into jewelery stores to look at wedding rings they always comment on the rock - its only slightly marked, but the rock itself is valued at around $1500.

I've been married almost two years, and still don't have wedding rings. I know the one I want - its set in platinum, and has a carat of diamonds (6 in total) in the band)
